Hello my TN friends!
Today in a short moment of my spare time I'd like to present you a true MONSTER!!!

What is that creature - you would ask! Is it from Star Wars? No my friends! It's a fly. But not an usual one. It is a creature appearing on the snow during the winter-time. Well, we don't have that much snow this year so I found one I photographed few years ago.

It's name is Niphadobata, and it belongs to family Tipulidae (crane-flies), order Diptera. It has no wings (it is "apterous") - quite unusual feature as for flies.

I had a great chance to shot this fellow, as my friend Agnieszka was at time doing a PhD devoted to nival fauna (animals that are associated with snow). Usually such creatures you may found when it's around 0 centigrades, clam weather and on relatively fresh snow.

Of course it's not that easy to get a good image of a dark insect on the snow. We took it to laboratory and photographed under a stereomicroscope Nikon SMZ800. The magnification here is ca. 50x.

Well, I hope I've entertained you a bit... and now let's get back to work :-)

No niezle, niezle! Chociaz troche jednak pozostaje miejsc, ktore zbyt ostre nie sa. Moze wiecej z profilu by sie wyciagnelo, chociaz ten punkt widzenia bardzo mi sie podoba :)
Ciekawa notka, chociaz dodalbym, ze ten gatunek jest bezskrzydly :) Raczej Tipulidae wszyscy kojarza z fruwajacym zwierzem.
I jak powiedziales, wracamy do pracy ;>
