I have been away for the last few days on holiday at this beautiful piece of New Zealand that has an amazing history. If you have the time, do a google search on Mt Tarawera and read how the eruption in 1886 destroyed the Pink and White Terraces which were considered the eighth wonder of the natural world. It makes for a very interesting, but devastating read. This is sunrise over Lake Tarawera with Mt Tarawera in the background. Mt Tarawera erupted in 1886 being the worst volcanic eruption in recorded history in New Zealand

Mt Tarawera Eruption

The Tarawera complex is comprised of more than 15 individual craters, only three were known to exist before 1886. These were Tarawera, Ruawahia and Wahanga but were thought to be extinct not dormant.

On June 10 1886, Wahanga was the first to blow up, closely followed by Ruawahia, then Tarawera. But the eruption that caused the 'big explosion' heard for hundred of kilometres was the under the Lake Rotomahana lakebed.

This crater blew out the contents of the lake, terraces and spread the ash and mud over the surrounding landscape. It was estimated that more than 2 billion cubic yards of ash were scattered over an area of more than 6000 square miles. Other areas of forest were flattened by the blasts as if by a mighty wind.

Wow Pam, really astonishing picture. Great colour and pov, you really give away the greatness of the landscape and the quietness of nature in this picture.
I would like to go to New Zealand myself one day. This is a great motivation, thanks for sharing. Good job!!!

Geert ;)

great shot. the detail and sharpness is wonderful, though I find the large areas of black border a little distracting, they haven't reduced the impact (sorry wrong word - strength) of the picture at all.

Hi Pam!

So exotic and so beautifull photo! It remainds me one of my favourite movies - The Thin Red Line - especially parts with ocean and jungle. Lovely sky, colours of clouds, POV, rays of sun and of course superb place. Right photographer in right place and time :-)

Very nice sunrise shot Pam.Pleasant POV and good composition.TFS

Hi Pam,
A very beautiful panoramic composition. The light and clouds look amazing. Very well composed and framed. I could look at that scenery every day!

Hi Pam,
You're so lucky to wake up with this marvelous view!
I think it's very good this landscape, with the glow made by the just appearing sun, and how the light baths everything here.
The clouds formations are simply gorgeous.
You made an exellent composition with all that mountain's silhouettes.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Pam

Remember when i told you that you seem to have been taking landscapes for a life time (or something like that)?...Well i wasn't wrong! (and i love being right ;))) )
This is a spendid view!
I hope you had a lot of lovely time in you holiday, a good relazation and a very "productive" photo "sestion" :)

The perspective here is just terrific and the colors and tones create a fantastic mood.
Also the composition is very well managed and balanced (with some nice palmtree silhouttes in the FG and an off-centred horizon) while the exposure is realyl spot-on.
Very good work!

Bravo and TFS

Absolutely stunning. What a glorious break you must of had. We are so lucky to be in NZ. Great shot Pam. TFS

Hi Pam,
I whish I had such a beautiful location that I could visit on a regular basis. I would sure be a great place to explore and come back with tons of photos.
You captured the area beautifully. The setting sun created some awesome colors in the clouds. But what I really like is the slight blue and purple color on the clear sky.
TFS,
Niek
