This is the 8th photo in the series on Rangitoto Island.

This pathway is getting closer to the top of Rangitoto. As you travel higher, you begin to notice the change in the colour of the earth. Here it is quite brown. And right at the top it is a real volcanic rust-brown. The bush is denser here and it is very steep.

The summit can be reached in a two-hour return walk from Rangitoto Wharf. We spent 6 hours on the island and we took our time climbing to the top, stopping many times for photos and water and rests! A loop track around the crater rim gives fine views of the extinct crater and Hauraki Gulf.

Summit views
Volcanic crater
Lava flows and caves
Pohutukawa forest
Unusual plants
Views of the Hauraki Gulf and its islands
Views of Auckland City, the North Shore, East Coast Bays and Whangaparaoa Peninsula
Gull colonies
World War II sites
Coastal and forest walks
Bare lava fields, lava caves, pillars and tunnels and different types of lava flows are all obvious features of the island's volcanic landscape.

Long walk Janice :-) As we can see your friend is much faster then you :-) I like long perspective and green plants on left side of the road. And old leaves! I love to walk on dry leaves. Great journey Janice! Waiting for panorama from the top.

Halo Janice!
It was certainly lovely day. I imagine I go there with you :-) Great place and very interesting photo!

Road to the secret garden Janice? :) Great shot of a lovely path way to the top! I love the different sort of green, but most of all, I like the green at the end of the path way, make you feel happy! :D good composition and well done.

Nice shot, but having the camera closer to the ground would give a better POV.
Well done.

Nice shot Janice. I always like lonely paths which go on and on. :) I therefore think you should have waited until that person was out of frame or you should have cloned him out. TFS!

Nice shot with impressive depth capture and a nice leading line. Well done, Janice.

Très belle image.:-)

Looks like a wonderful place to hike! My sister and I have always enjoyed hiking. Now that we both work full time it is pretty hard to find the time to do a long day hike together. But we're goingt to try to do more of it this summer. This photo is very inviting and leaves on the ground, the bushes on the sides are great, and the focus is good. Nice photo!
