I dont know this specie, looks like some kind of "Paneolus" but not sure at all, so lets talk about saprophytic fungi.

Saprophytic fungi are the largest group of fungi, they growing on dead organic matter such as fallen trees, cow patties, dead leaves, and even dead insects and animals. These fungi have enzymes that work to "rot" or "digest" the cellulose and lignin found in the organic matter, with the lignin being an important source of carbon for many organisms. Without their digestive activities, organic material would continue to accumulate until the forest became a huge rubbish dump of dead leaves and trees.

Saprophytes may thrive on all parts of plants, trees and even burned or mummified parts and partly digested matter in dung. Some of them are strongly specialized and can only exist on e.g. alder-catkins, pine-needles or reed-stems. Many others will attack different kinds of wood, however with a strong preference to a certain state of the substrate's decomposition. Any piece of wood will be fully decomposed in time by a succession of different kinds of fungi. The preceding fungus thus preparing the wood in favour of the next fungus. Some species prefer little twigs or branches, others need a really big wood-stump.

Leave aside the fungus for a moment...i'm just admiring the originality of the frame! WOW! Truely magnificent...and it integrates so well in the shot...amazing!

OK...now back to the picture: i really love the composition, too. The positioning of the fungi in the frame is impeccable, but what i think makes a great difference is that great tree-log and all those lives and cracks that lead towards its center...superb!
The details are very nice, too and the exposure is spot-on - also giving you these splendid natural colors.
