Noise reduction with NeatImage | | AdrianW
(710) [2006-08-31 08:45:14] [16] | Load the pic into NeatImage, then click on the DeviceNoiseProfile tab. Since the image was captured in RGB, I'd switch the WorkingColorSpace to RGB.
Find an area without any important detail - the background to the right of his head is good - now select it by dragging a box. You'll get a warning about the RGB values not being uniform, ignore that - for the best noise profile you want an area without any detail at all, just noise - but there aren't any areas like that in the image.
Now go to the NoiseFilterSettings tab and draw a big box to see the effect of our current filter settings. Not pretty was it? That's due to the non-uniform profile area. It's fixable though! Look at the image again, you'll see that the noise is fine or medium - there aren't many large blotches, so under NoiseReductionAmounts set the Low slider to 0%. Looks a bit better doesn't it? Now play with each of the sliders in turn - try them at 0, wait for it to redraw, then try at 100. Now you know what the slider does - try finding the optimal value for it :)
Load back into Photoshop on top of the original image - turn the Layer on and off to see what effect we've had. In this case the results were mostly positive, except for a bit of detail lost around the edges - so use a soft-edged eraser to knock that out.
Finally SmartSharpen 75%, 0.8px, 0 to bring out the fine detail :) |

Cropped off the top and bottom to accentuate the area of interest IMO.
Increased saturation +15 to add a bit more bite, along with minor USM (50%, 10px, 0).
Finally added a little vignetting using Filter/Distort/LensCorrection +35 darken.

(710) [2006-07-29 11:21:59] [4] | Ran Shadows/Highlights 60%/0 to brighten up the image, then ran Curves with an s-shaped curve (like this to increase contrast without damaging the highlights.
Extended the canvas using Canvas Size, then made a copy of the hind leg using Rectangular Marquee - pasted in and turned on "Show Transform Controls". Grabbed the bottom right handle and rotated until the leg orientation matched. Then used a soft-edged eraser to nibble away the background around it.
Finally used the Clone Tool to paint back in the missing sections of background. Used a soft-edged tool @ 100%. The trick to successful cloning is to run along lines of detail, in this case the veins on the leaf.

AutoColor (faded to 65%) to alter the colours back to your preference. SmartSharpen 65%, 0.8px, 0 (Lens Blur) to bring out the fine detail a little more (low radius = fine detail, high radius = coarse detail)
Finally HighPass Sharpening @ 25% to give it a little more bite. See high pass @ LL for more detail on that technique. |

First loaded into Photoshop and ran Image/Adjustments/PhotoFilter, selected the 85-filter (a warming filter), and ran that at 25% - to warm up the slightly over cool colours.
Then ran Curves, two points - one point top quarter pulled top left, the other on the low quarter, pulled to the original line - to form an s-shape. That increases brightness and apparent contrast in one step - without blowing the highlights.
Final step, loaded into NeatImage (easier if you have the plug-in), selected the clear area just above the flower for the Rough Noise Analyser area. Added some sharpening in the Noise Filter Settings tab - high 65%, low 100% to bring out detail.

(710) [2005-12-20 14:00:31] [8] | Purpose: To fix the chromatic aberration (coloured fringes), reduce noise, and bring out a bit more detail.
How? Converted to LAB mode, selected A-channel applied GaussianBlur 4px, repeated with B-channel. Also reduces colour noise.
Loaded into NeatImage, used the top right hand area to create a noise profile. Filtered.
Sharpened using USM three passes on L channel: (10% 20px 0) (40% 1.2px 0) (20% 0.8px 0). Faded to 45% - could have used lower values, but I have that setup as an Action.
Ran a high-pass Sharpen: NewLayerViaCopy, HighPass 10px. Merge HardLight. (30%)
Finally if there were any fringes remaining, used CloneTool in Color mode to mop them up :)
