VENEZUELA, officially the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is a country located in the northern part of South America, consisting of a mainland and a large number of small islands and islets in the Caribbean Sea. The mainland bordering the sea on the north and bordered by Colombia to the west, with Brazil to the south and Guyana to the east. With the latter, the Venezuelan government maintains a dispute over the Essequibo territory. Due to its island territories, exercising sovereignty over nearly 860,000 km ² of the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean under the concept of economic zone exclusiva.6 This marine area bounded by the thirteen states.
TOPONYMY: The term "Land of Grace" given by Columbus to these places, has prevailed to this day as a pseudonym of the country. But the following year, an expedition led by Alonso de Ojeda visited the coast of the territory up to the entrance of Lake Maracaibo today, in a gulf located between the peninsulas of Paraguana and Guajira. On that voyage, the crew observed the houses built by Indians Añú, erected on wooden stilts jutting out of the water. These stilt houses reminded Amerigo Vespucci of Venice, Venezia, in Italian, as stated in a letter to Piero de Medici. This was a reason Ojeda inspired to name Venezziola or Venezuela, Little Venice, to the Gulf region and they had made the discovery, receiving the name of Gulf of Venezuela.
Context and conditions
Venezuela's geographic location corresponds to the Northern Hemisphere, and its southern boundary is very close to the ground line of Ecuador. Its mainland is composed of a compact land mass that extends evenly from east to west and from north to south. Its territory comprises a set of island archipelagos, islands and islets in the Caribbean Sea. Its geography provides a wide variety of natural resources, particularly energy and minerals, as well as species and ecosystems.
The country is located on the northern coast of South America and occupies most of the South American Caribbean. North has a coastline on the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In the Caribbean Sea has a long coastline of 2718 km long, while in the Atlantic Ocean is 556 km of which would be added the coastal area of the territory in dispute with Guyana Guyana known as Essequibo, thus reaching 1008 km.
