I used smart-sharpen in Photoshop CS2, but an unsharp-mask would work just as well. I used an amount of 400% and a radius of 0.3 pixels.
then I did a very slight crop to enable me to add a simple frame and still be within the 800 pixels limit. I hope that this is useful for you.
Andy.

Using Photoshop CS2, Converted image to LAB mode, then used a smart-sharpen of 300/0.4 on the Lightness channel.
Added saturation of 10% of the reds, then a further 13% on everything.

The white balance in the original photo was too magenta, caused by all the green fooling the camera, it's very common if you use auto-white balance. I adjusted white balance to add more green in shadows, mid-tones and highlights. Also adjusted the levels just a little to darken the mid-tones.
I had to use level 2 low quality to re-save this jpeg, there is so much detail in it!

The highlights seem way too bright to me, especially the large area of wood which seems to glow and really distracts the eye from the dragonfly.
I used photoshop Shadow/Highlight adjustment and used values of 11% amount, 50% tonal width and 30 pixel radius on the highlights. I have no idea what these figures mean, I just moved the sliders until the image looked right! :)

Here is the full frame as it was taken. You can see why I cropped it!! Loads of interference from the wire cage, but more importantly, extremely badly composed! Shameful! I'll use the excuse that the wires stopped me doing a proper job ;) If I hadn't already said I'd post a WS, I'd keep this hidden away!
Of course the image will be a lot smaller, but I'd welcome suggestions for a better crop from this original.

Loads of people naturally pointed out that the branch in the mid-foreground was distracting, so I thought I'd post this workshop with the branch and it's reflection in the water removed. I just used the clone tool to do so. In my opinion, there is not a drastic improvement, I love the photo with or without the branch :)

OK, so a lot of people criticized the plain white background on my original post. I did say that the original sky was dull already as you can see here, and I knew it would be extremely difficult to keep the darker sky and the correctly exposed owl, which is why I decided to post it as it was. Remember that TN rules 'officially' restrict the type of PP'ing this workshop has involved, I know everyone does it, but I like to keep my posts as close to the original as possible.
Anyway, here's what I did to produce this workshop: Opened my original RAW file with the exposure settings I used before. Duplicated the image, then opened the RAW file again with very little exposure compensation. The sky was bluer but the owl is drastically under exposed.
I copied and pasted the 'white' image as a new layer on the dark image, then used a layer mask to carefully remove all the white sky. The main difficulty was the wing tips where a lot of white light has shine through the wings, so even though the sky now appears blue, there is only white showing through. If I let more of the darker layer show through, the wings will look far too dark. Finally, I re-sized and added a very subtle USM, to minimize the obvious edges.
So, this is the best I could do. I don't think it's good enough for a full re-post so I've left it as a workshop.
Andy.

Added some contrast, cropped a bit from the top, increased red and yellow saturation to enhance the beaks and feet, adjusted highlight colour balance as the birds looked a little too Cyan. Added frame. It looks like a postcard now, although that wasn't intentional!

Not as soft as I remember it being but still far from perfectly sharp. I think I may have sharpened it before and after re-sizing it, to reduce the quality loss. This is a full-scale crop of the original unsharpened RAW file.

Lightened the midtone level (to 1.34, I think) to bring out more detail in the shaded areas on the left.
