Removing the Best Argus Gold Star Critiquer/Gold Star Workshop Editor/Gold Note Writer [C: 5077 W: 260 N: 15590] (50614)::2011-03-06 4:43
I was very dismayed to see that the TN moderators had removed Professor Ahmet Karatash’s (rousettus) fine collage depicting biodiversity. With it he also celebrated his time on TN.

I hope this action has not discouraged him, as he is one of the most valuable members on TN.

I know the TOS say that images that have been previously posted should not be repeated, but when a respected and valuable contributor to this site infringes this rule by reducing the size of his images by including them in a collage the rule can be overlooked.

So rules should be different for respected and valuable contributors? When do you become such a member?

I think we all had our share of deleted photos by not understanding the rules of this site. I surely made several mistakes. I learned from them and moved on. It certainly did not made me think of departing the site especially since it was my mistake.

No matter how often the moderators removed images from the site, many other questionable post are still hanging around. So, their restriction seems selective, and that is unfair, I think! Just have a look please, those links here:

George,
If you have question a photo, you have the option to report a photo. Moderators will then decide to their best of knowledge what to do with them.

I hope that help you on these.

1. I agree with George "So, moderator's restriction seems selective, and that is unfair".
2. I think there are some people who we shoud have respect for - for example Professor Ahmet Karatash (rousettus). He can give us many interesting knowledge - more than many moderators.
3. Moderators - please remember that you are moderators because of us - user of this site. And you are for us, not against us.

Reminds me of a few of mine back in the day. A few night photos and such I posted which the admins wanted me to delete because my buddy Joey helped fix up some noise on it. So I suppose all the work has to be done myself, fortunately now days I know how to deal with noise in photos. It was a little annoying. But I suppose I understand. ;-)

Hy George
First of all I am not reacting because one of my images is between those mentioned by you, but because that it seems that you consider also removable also images of some poor guys who do not have the skills and cameras to obtain excellent images and are rather poor qualitatively. Like the image with the two gulls : the image is "horible", and if you are disturbed by the boats visible in the upper part of the image, you can suggest a crop. Another two shoots that you disconsider are thosewith birds at the feeding place: one is very interesting, because it"s showing a nutnatch (Sita spp) toghether with another species (I don't know exactly). It is a pitty that the photographer did not explain more.
Another image is that prezenting some species of grass ( around 8 I think) which is VERY informative , and very few members are bothering to create such colage ( yeah, you may prezent 8 different images and receive points for each one). I completly disagree with you about this image!!

And in the end, in the past, there were many colages with already prezented photosand there were not removed!

Regards,
Oana

PS: sorry for my english, I am writing fast and don't have time to correct...

And speaking now about the topic...Many things changed in the past years so, why we are wandering for such sad things! I do not think that now we have to argue and fight with each other...becasue it seems that this discussion will go in that direction (even me beeing a little bit against George choise )

I do not think that the image will be reposted by the admin.

Dear moderator
I have been a member of TN exactly four year and I am an academician on zoology. Namely nature photography and related subjects are either my hobby (like most members of TN) and my professional job.
Marh 4th was first day of my fifth year on the site. For four years, I have uploaded 499 posts and about 400 animals, plants, fungi species, including many new species of these groups for TN.
Well, I posted a collage for two reasons. Firstly, it was my 500th post and first post of fifth year.
Secondly, I'd like to give information about biodiversity, with selected shots of my posts.
I would add list of 500 shots with hundreds species of animals, plants and mushrooms; under the post. I have been in field trip and I have not enough time to finish the notes.
I always try to introduce animals and other creatures to TN member and other people for better conservation of nature. You will find (on the collage) correct sample of each group, from fungi, mosses, dicotyledone and monocotyledone plants and spiders to beetles, butterflies, frogs and mammals. Each group was in systematical orders.
I thought this would become a good reference for many people with learning nature. It is only single one post among 100 thousand posts in TN.
Well, first piece (fungus) of the collage different the my previous shot. Similarly Iris flower (right corner of first line) is different (I posted same flower with different shot). Swift is different with my present post on TN. Others have different cropped and resized. Therefore they are different from mine on TN.
I'd like to repost my 500th by moderator. If not, I will protest and I will be inactive, like many previous members and friends
sorry for my poor English. I hope this explanation will be enough.

Are collages against the rules?
Re: Removing the Best rousettus Gold Star Critiquer/Gold Star Workshop Editor/Gold Note Writer [C: 2216 W: 73 N: 5656] (19810)::2011-03-08 15:59
I dont think so. After a moderator's e-mail, I wrote a note above. Some details present in there.

Dear Ahmet
I fully understand your approach. The main problem is obviously that again, even though largely debated here on the forum the moderators keep silent.
The least I would expect from the moderators would be their OK to repost the same collage here and to give rules as to the future.
TN is a great site but due to several changes these last months it is becoming sometimes pretty frustrating, just think of all the people that already left TN.
So if one more great photographer and field expert with great notes like Ahmet is leaving, this will probably the end of TN for me too.
Really hope the moderators will give their opinion in this forum.
Tom

I really don't understand what all the fuzz is about. When one of my photos was deleted, it stated why it was deleted. I then checked the TOS again to make sure I understood the rules which I agreed to when I joined this site.

Ahmet has mentioned in his own reply that he cropped and resized photos he previously uploaded. As you all know, this is not allowed to the TOS.

I completely agree with SunToucher here.

Please read again the TOS:

4. Identical photos (unmodified or not) may not be posted to more than one Trek Site (TrekEarth, TrekLens, TrekNature).

We can't simply give privilege to "senior" members or any other members who think they have a good reason...

Amicalement - Viviane aka Porteplume

* Are collages against the rules?

No, collages are NOT against the rules but you may not use duplicates, modified or not.

Can I learn about the date of this rule? (at least, its year).

I believe it was 2004 when Adam and Rob created TrekNature.

May I suggest to Ahmet to repost his collage after replacing the duplicated image if there is only very few duplicated images.

I am confident that Ahmet has in his collection more than one good image of the same subject. By replacing the duplicate, he will conform to the TOS and will at the same time respect his intension of presenting collage corresponding very closely to the design he has in mind. And, of course, for the pleasure of our eyes.

Yes it is frustrating to have a picture removed and I also lived that before. But the satisfaction of sharing our works should be greater than the frustration of "loosing" one post.
