What do you feed Hedgehogs? hester Gold Star Critiquer/Silver Workshop Editor/Gold Note Writer [C: 1515 W: 18 N: 3165] (11638)::2007-11-27 9:41
For the first time I have a pair of Hedgehogs in my garden. They are very sweet but I doubt I will get any shots of them. They only come out at night and hide if I open the back door. They don't mind me watching them behind my glass door.

My question is what should they eat? I am feeding them mealworms (which they love) and water. I did buy some Hedgehog food but they wouldn't eat this.

I want them to bulk up to help them survive winter (so I get hoglets in the spring :))

Mealworms are good (and with hogs you don't need to cut their heads off as they are incredibly good 'chewers'), but it will not bulk them up.
The best thing you can give them is normal cat or dog food from a tin/pack. Just make sure you don't give them any fish flavours, this is a big no no!
Feed them twice a day (morning and evening), approx two large tablespoons (quarter of a tin ish?) per hog per feed. Dry cat/dog food is also important as it helps with oral hygiene.
I've also heard that it isn't advisable to give IAMS to hogs as it can cause longterm liver problems.
They should also eat some fruit and veg that is high in fibre. Try a variety to see what they will eat, if any!

Finally, the perfect hibernation weight is between 500-600g. If you think they are too small to be out and about it may be better for them if they are taken to a wildlife rescue centre (they will be returned to you in the Spring).
A young underweight hedgehog will not be able to hibernate on its own so will not make it through the winter.

Hope this helps.
Julia.

Hi Julia

Wonderful information here. I have never had hedgehogs before and suddenly I have two. I shall get some cat or dog food tomorrow. I think they look over 500g (I wonder if I can persuade them to climb on the scales for me :)) but shouldn't they be hibernating already? They seem to be living under my shed

Hello Karan

It really depends on the hog, some won't hibernate properly until Dec or even Jan. This depends on many factors, but as long as there is food at hand (and they aren't under weight) it shouldn't be a problem. Their only predator's are badgers, man and extreme weather conditions - if you can call the weather a predator?!? ;o)
If they have found a perfect spot under your shed they will probably forage for food until the time is right for them.

Julia.

One of them has just been to visit. I recorded him through the glass with the camcorder and he looks a good healthy weight.

Thanks for the advice Julia.

As you can tell they are more than welcome in my garden and will be dining on cat food tomorrow

I thought hogs that lived in hedges ate greens...as in hedges? Tell me there is really no such thing as hedgehog food....you are surely kidding right? I have a major feed store within sight of my city dwelling we call government housing. I just know if I go ask those buckaroos if they have hedgehog food they are going to laugh like crazy. I know how this works...my wife watches all the cooking shows and on Martha Stewart she saw a recipe which was wanting some lemon curd..and Martha told her via the tube that all groceries carry it... so off I went on my electric scooter to buy some at a rather large grocery store..and folks that didn't laugh at me looked as though they thought I was nuts..Of course I am ...what is my point? Ooops I didn't have one sorry... just wondering.

Bob, you may find this 'thread' useful...

And apparently Lemon Curd (or curved as my daughter used to call it) is used by us Brits with our
scones - how very quaint ;o)
And as for 4.95 for an 8oz jar? Scandelous! I'm sure I can pick it up in Waitrose for 69p!! (approx $1.40).

Anyway, this is completely off topic so I should probably leave it there.

Have a good say - Julia :o)

I was tongue in cheek joking of course, however lemon curd did sound delightful. I ssuspect Europe is where Martha bought it commonly. The US is sorely lacking in cultural cuisine outside of fine dining establishments.

I wonder if hedgehogs will eat it?

Not sure about hogs either, but badgers definitely would. They have a dreadful sweet tooth, and are particularly partial to custard cream biscuits ;o)

Hello Karan
Just for a note on feeding hedgehogs...
The hedgehog population seemed to be much higher in villages and towns years ago...My Nan lived in Crawley and I lived where I do now (being a small village).. and the staple diet we fed them was bread and milk..And they thrived on it year after year...I dont really think in this day and age theres such a thing as a hedgehog diet advisor!!...if you look at the carbs available in milk and bread then that seems to me to supply enough for hibernation..it used to work for years...as for the loss of all the hedgeys...to many wheels on the road I think?

I think my hedgehogs are fussy eaters. They wouldn't eat the hedgehog food and they turned their nose up at the pet food but they went wild over the mealworms. I've got wise to this now and have mixed all the food together, this tactic seems to work.

I am sure they wouldn't like the lemon curd but I bet the wouldn't say no to a custard cream :)

If its working then carry on with it..as long as they are getting some carbs and fat to see them through the winter thats all that matters.....I think its great that you are taking the time to really care for the hedgeys...we all should do the same given the opportunity....Another quick note..if they get through the winter then you really have the joy of hearing them courting...they make such a noise!!

I'm sorry, but feeding hedgehogs both milk and bread can be very bad for them, leading to stomach upset and probably diarrhea. Obviously they will eat it, but this doesn't mean it is good for them.

Don't worry they are on a mixture of pet food, hedgehog food and mealworms all mixed together. If it has mealworms in it then they will eat it. They have plenty of water to drink (I love watching them lap up the water). They get this at night and then at 5.30 in the morning when I get up. I think I may be spoiling them.
I have 3 hedgehogs now :) hester Gold Star Critiquer/Silver Workshop Editor/Gold Note Writer [C: 1515 W: 18 N: 3165] (11638)::2007-12-01 14:15
Just a little update, I have just looked through the window and found 3 hedgehogs on the food trays. I'm not sure where they are all coming from. I may have to buy some more food.

Hi Karan,

I am new to the site, but I have done a bit of research, and I think hedgehogs love to eat:
High quality, reduced calorie, cat food,
this can be offered with small amounts of mixed fruits and vegetables.
Or,as a treat hedgehogs will LOVE live insects, as you are already serving them.
Any crickets, mealworms, or earthworms,

BUT DO NOT FEED TO MANY, OR THEY WILL BECOME OVERWEIGHT!

Thanks,
Ruby :)
