I tried similar things, I suppose it is a matter of taste. While it is possible to bring out the eye and other details, this is at the expense of natural colour and texture. The real answer is more patience/time to get better shots in the first place. This was the best of the several shots that I was able to take before this particular group moved off and then, as in my note, I was trying to capture a fly catcher in breeding plumage. In the n morning, while I was there for professional reasons, I saw several- afternoon with time and camera, not one!
