I'm glad you like my mixture of color and texture. As a biologist you probably also appreciate the mini-ecosystem that this dense layer creates in the 15 to 25 cm underneath it. I did not dig in and look, but I can easily imagine that it is criss-crossed with mouse and vole trails like deer runs in the forest. It would be an interesting study sometime to place a series of tiny cameras under the canopy and watch what happens. Perhaps some enterprising ecologist has already done this.
