and you are right they can be difficult to separate. Fortunately NZ has acouple of really good fungi sites where there is tons of info. One is Clive's Hidden Forest site that you know, and the other is NZfungi which can be found here

This site has really good descriptions that can help in ID.

There is also a third red species H. cantharellus that also looks similar. It seems the colour of the gills and stem are important. I will illustrate this spcies in a couple of days. just don't getthe time to spend on TN these days.
