|I was very impressed with my first visit to this Zoo in 20 years. |
Every one I spoke to said that I was making a mistake and should go to the Pretoria Zoo instead. Upon asking, they too have been to this Zoo on average more than ten years ago. This was a delightful day, even on month end and on a Saturday, there were not crowds of people. The food at the restaurant is reasonably priced and commendable. I had a full "English Breakfast" for ZAR30. There are a lot of food stands spread throughout the Zoo were cold drinks and snacks can be bought.
The most impressive enclosures were the natural open air wetland system, the carnivore dens and the Sasol Aviary.
The Johannesburg Zoo is open 365 days a year, rain or shine, from 08h30 to 17h30. Ticket prices are from ZAR18 for children to ZAR30 for adults. They are continuously constructing new and improved enclosures for animals as funding are received. Current construction is underway with the large primate enclosure. Itís going to be a stunning enclosure once finished.
I can recommend this Zoo, as I spent nearly five hours there and still had the feeling I rushed through it.
