Red Crested Pochard
Netta rufina

This is a male (drake), I've posted a capture of the female as a Workshop which you can find here!

This species is a winter migrant to the UK, although there are also breeding colonies - the breeding colonies are thought to be founded from escaped captive specimens.

Interestingly the species has been pictured on many stamps - from countries as far apart as Afghanistan and Portugal! If you're interested there are some at pictures of the stamps here.

The species usually inhabits lakes and disused gravel pits, preferring some reed cover at the margins. It feeds on aquatic vegetation.

If you're curious about its call, there are some links to that here

Excellent! This is good. Marvelous lightening on the head, superb colors (especially on the head), great POV & DOF. Razorsharp details.

Well done on this capture. The lighting on the head shows warmth. Crisp, sharp and detailed. Excelent shot.
The reflection of the duck in the water might have been an added bonus.

Mike

Simply beautiful capture, Adrian! I've often wondered why God made the males even prettier than their ladies in nature. Doesn't seem fair to the females. Well done and TFS.

Good composition and nice and sharp. This is a n excellent shot.

Hi Adrian
The thing that strikes me first is the under-handed way in which he is laying the eye on you, and then the lovely punk hairdo. Beautiful no nits, and except for the colouration, he reminds me of Daffy Duck. TFS

Hi Adrian, super picture. I like these punky looking ducks. Glad to see that you have visited Bushy Park. Lovely details and the water looks ace. The WS is very funny, thanks for posting.

Exceptional work. That head really bobs out of the screen. Lovely color and a catchy eye. Excellent capture.
