I dedicate this post to Claudine.

I did not invent the term "flying flowers" as it applies to butterflies, but I think it is a most appropriate comparison. They are amazing in their sizes, varities, colors, and patterns. Who can resist such a delicate and beautiful creature.

Once in a while I get lucky and get a decent shot on one. The light was really good here and I was able to catch this guy in full wing spread. Due to his constant motion and fluttering, I was forced to go to a higher shutter speed to freeze the action.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (male) - Papilio glaucus.

Taken at our local nature preserve.

Amazing timing. Hope your friend Claudine will like two "flying flowers" back to back! I am guessing that you photographed a male Tiger Swallowtail. Very nice picture. Beautiful flower as well.

Hello Scott,
it is not often that the male and female of a species a presented so nicely together. Just as the female this is a very nice image. Much more than with the female it is difficult to tell where the front and rear wind start and end.
Thanks for sharing this picture,
Regards, Jacob

Hi Scott
It is perfect. Great shapness, beautiful colors, very good OOF buckground. The only think that (maybe) you could change is composition (cropping) I think that you could crop it a little bit more from the left side
Best wishes

Hello Scott ! Well this one is just perfect, everything is great in it. I just love it ! Thanks,

Hi Scott,
A great gesture for a wonderful lady. You captured this butterfly very beautifully. The perfect pose and the fact that it was sitting on the thistle makes the photo magnificent. I really like the soft light in this photo. It produced some wonderful soft colors. DOF and details are perfect and make the b'fly and flower stand out from the BG.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Scott
Another sharp, detailed and beautifully composed butterfly. The colours are awesome, excellent DOF and soft lighting. Well done!!!

Your lucky you still have butterflies...ours are almost all gone...sniff sniff. Snow flurries are in the forecast for Wednesday...sniff sniff. But if it snow hopefully it will melt when it hits the ground.

Hi Scott.
You managed to picture an amazing swallowtail at so beautiful surroundings. I like great sharpness of both of them and perfectly selected DOF. BG is well blurred, stands out of the main subject and supplements it excellently. Lighting and colours are wonderful too. Excellent job and TFS.
Alexei.

bonjour scott
cette espece est vraiment tres belle,en general ce papillon a tendance a faire courrir un peu le photographe.
la photo est evidemment parfaite.
laurent

Hi Scott,
Really nice balance lighting throughout your front layer, the soft OOF backround is definitely the result of a well selected aperature. Both Colors and details are fantastic. Perfection! :)

Scott, a colorful beauty.

Excellent sharpness, composition and blurred bg.

Lovely colors and saturation.

Congratulations on your webpage.

Hello Scott,
beautiful clear and precise details and deeply saturated natural colours in pleasantly warm hues.
Perfectly frozen in motion, and perfectly well focussed all over. Very fine textures of the wings' surface are well visible here. The impressing size of this swallowtail is also well demonstrated here.
Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

Hi Scott

Hello Scott

Just marking the post for now

Rob

Your work is just perfection. I can learn so much just browsing your gallery. Well done - it takes a fast shutter speed to capture these beauties and you did great here! There is no flutter - no motion - just perfection!

Hi Scott,
Great close up of a beautiful butterfly! Love the angle and the blurred background that makes the colors stand out so well TFS

Hi Scott,

Great picture of a spectacular butterfly. I met this one in Arizona several years ago, but it was much darker. Probably it was some regional form or subspecie.

Cheers, Petru
