[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
For a week, I have not enough time and therefore I could not upload a new shot to TN. Meanwhile I could not write very much critiques on your posts. Now, I send a new photograph of my birds. It was captured on hand against sunlight edge in Lake Tödürge in Sivas Province on September 10th, 2007. I hope you will like it. You can read about species of today and its relatives.
Tenth order of birds in Turkiye, CHARADIIFORMES, consists of 85 of 350 species from ten of 20 families all over the world. Up to now, I try to introduce some of them (click fallowing links for details), i.e. Himantopus himantopus (1, 2, 3) (Recurvirostridae), Burhinus oedicnemus (1, 2) (Burhinidae), Charadrius dubius (1, 2) (Charadriidae),
Limosa limosa, Calidris minuta (1, 2), Tringa totanus (Scolopacidae), Larus ridibundus (1, 2) and Larus michahellis (Laridae).
Today’s post is a tern which from Sternidae (Denizkırlangıçları, Sumrular [TR], Terns [EN]), the sixth family, which is represented by 10 species of three genera Sterna (6 spp.), Gelochelidon (1 sp.) and Chlidonias (3 spp.) in Turkiye.
The genus Chlidonias is known as "marsh terns" and its species darker bodies unlike the "white terns" of the genus Sterna. Later dives to catch fishes, whereas members of Chlidonias don’t dive and pick insects and small fishes, flying slowly over the water.
The bird on the photograph is a Chlidonias leucopterus (Temminck, 1815) – Akkanatlı Sumru [TR], White-winged Black Tern [EN] in moulting period. In breeding season, its adult has black neck and belly, blackish (very dark grey) dorsum, white rump, white mainly wings, light grey tail, short bill black, short legs red. The inner side of wings is greyish and their tips are brown. Plumage in winter is similar to that on photograph, a bit lighter. Ch. leucopterus is 20-23 cm in length, 63-67 cm in wingspan. It breeds and nests on floating vegetation or water edge in freshwater marshes. During winter, it lives on seashores. In breeding period, it is seen from Southeastern Europe to Turkistan (Central Asia) and it winters in Africa, Oriental Region (South Asia) and Australia. It widely ranges from Australia to Southeast Europe. In Turkiye, Akkanatlı Sumru breeds in the coastal line of Karadeniz (Black Sea); it is visitor in the other parts of the country.
Dedication to a kind person, Dr. Riyat Gül, who is one of the founders of Turkish Birds’s Site "TRAKUŞ" and he helps always for species identification friendly. Also many thanks my dear friend Nicholas Glen (nglen) that the title is originated from his nice critique.

Fallowing paragraph is similar to information about the species and for Turkish reader.

Hi Ahmet . The bird has its own island. you have captured good detail in the feathers .and natural looking colours. you have used the light well. well done TFS. good notes too,
Nick..

Beautiful bird, that "Sumru" Ahmet, in an excellent posture against lake waters which look more like quicksilver than water! Display of the wings look so nice from your POV, both upper and lower surfaces visible and in good focus, the bird seemingly balanced on its toetips. Very good my friend, and TFS.

Hello Ahmet,
Excellent capture of a White-winged Black Tern in winter plumage. Good timing to show the wings well in this position with fine sharpness, which makes a good contrast against the rippling water.
Very nice image, my friend and thanks for sharing it,
Ivan

Hi Ahmet.
You managed to picture amazing scene and moment. I like it a lot. Timing is simply superb as well as the composition of the picture at whole. Great exposure despite the backlight and excellent details and sharpness of the image. I like creative framing of the shot. My compliments.
Alexei.

Excelente imagen y original encuadre.
Buena nota y enlaces.
Saludos, JL.

Salam Ahmet,

I am sorry that you are tied up with work. I do too all the time - and with my lectures too. Anyway you have beautiful gallery that I can keep coming back too and I like them all.

This is wonderful capture with the wings spread out and in excellent sharpness. That little island is so pleasing against the clear water. Nice fancy framing fit for a well shot image.

Well done and have a wonderful weekend.

Regards,
Jusni
