The family Turdidae is represented by 29 species in Turkiye. Of these, six species belong to the genus Turdus Linnaeus, 1758. These species are
*** Turdus torquatus – Boğmaklı Ardıç (Ring Ouzel)
*** Turdus merula – Karatavuk (Blackbird)
*** Turdus pilaris – Tarla Ardıcı (Fieldfare)
*** Turdus philomelos – Öter Ardıç (Song Thrush)
*** Turdus iliacus – Kızıl Ardıç (Redwing)
*** Turdus viscivorus – Ökse Ardıcı (Mistle Thursh)
Today’s post is Turdus merula Linnaeus, 1758 – Karatavuk [TR], Blackbird [EN]. It is one of the most common birds in winter. It is recognized easily, with all black male except yellow eye ring and orange-yellow bill. The female is brownish colored and its bill is not yellow except for base of brownish bill. Subadults have spotted plumage.
The photo was captured from Malaga City of Endulus Region in Southern Spain, when we had a lunch break in IUCN meeting on redlist assessment of Mediterranean Basin Mammals.
I learnt that today is Emeritus Professor Mehmet Kutsay Atatür (matatur)’s birthday and I send this shot to him as a small gift. Happy birthday! my lecturer and my dear friend. I wish you all the best with long life.

Salam Ahmet,

What a wonderful 99th post. The last before going on the three digits number. Mehmet will be thrilled to see this, I'm sure.

This bird looks rather like our Mynas except for the color. Beautifully perched on that curved branch and excellent view of the plumage from the back. The sharpness and details are excellent as all your previous post. Well done and thanks for sharing this one.

Best regards from Malaysia.

Jusni

Hi Ahmet,
This is a nice composition with superb pastel colors and good exposure. Black birds are not easy to expose and you did great as we can see nice details on the bird! Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Ahmet,

Mehmet hocaya ne kadar anlamlı bir hediye .... bence
karakuş un bakış açısı çok güzel ve gözlem yapmak için bile zor olan bu türün bence başarılı bir fotoğrafı...

Hello Ahmet

A lovely capture of the cousin of our robin (Turdus migratorious).
The pose is lovely with it's head cocked to the side.
Excellent exposure in the dark plumage.
The shot is well illuminated with natural colours.
Nicely composed in the frame.

Merhaba Dr.Ahmet,

Very good exposure control of this Blackbird.
I can see the white streaks and the plumages very well and the sharp claws too.

Wassalam,
/Tabib/.

Nefis bir poz olmuş,
ışık netlik ve detaylar çok hoş.
Tebrikler..

Hi Ahmet,
A lovely greetings for Mr. Mehmet. A very good dedication. A very good photographer of shells indeed. A beautiful capture of this lovely black bird. Excellent composition and details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

I can easily say that I grew up with those Blackbirds in my father's farm in Limanreis, İzmir! They have a special meaning for me and now I'm grateful to you for reminding me those old days my friend. Your low angle shot displays the characteristics of this beautiful bird nicely against a pleasantly lighter colored OOF BG. Thanks again for this fine present Ahmet.
Yours,
Mehmet

Hi Ahmet

Hello Ahmet,
These birds are so charming, we have them in the garden, the female often settles inside the birdtable to have a feast! Their behaviour is fascinating to watch. Lovely capture of this male in a fine pose and with sharp details and beautiful colours against the light background. Well composed too!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla
