A LONG TIME AGO, IN A MEADOW FAR, FAR AWAY . . .
The Insect World was in turmoil - New Species were developing, older races were disappearing and fossilised. There were mighty upheavals on Terra and Gondwanaland was breaking away from Pangaea.

The warriors of the Arachnida were on the increase while the life force were waning weaker in the Insecta clan. The Armoured Warriors were few and far between – could they, would they, be able to restore the balance in their then not so miniature world?

Sorry; I do get carried away sometimes. This fine warrior was sitting on my car window yesterday afternoon, and the combination of glass, rubber and metallic paint just sort of set my mind racing into other worlds. His eye was SO bright, it looks unreal. This is one of many species of grasshoppers found in SA.

The Family Acrididae has 356 species in our region, and these are divided into 13 subfamilies. This critter is most probably a Garden Locust - Acanthacris ruficornis . It can reach 65 cm - this one was just slightly smaller. It has a midline cream stripe with wings & thorax being dark brown. The hind tibiae boast well-developed white and red spines – these can draw blood easily from a careless finger. The nymphs are soft and bright green in contrast! These guys and their cousins can consume up to 130kg grass per hectare per annum, more than livestock!

I have posted a WS showing the Full Monty, but I liked the mug shot more.

Hello Callie
Very nice Macro and comment

Nice to get carried away sometimes, Callie, specially when insects are presented like you did with this garden locust. Very good mugshot, taking us to some science-fiction adventure. Changing from great cats and flamboyant birds, isn't it?

Great introducing story Callie :-) Something like Star Wars, something like fantasy or maybe even Warhammer 40.000? Picture looks very 'industrial' with this armoured warrior. Great post!
ps. I still didn't see new Star Wars movie! I know - shame on me, but maybe this week :-)

May you are just seeing too many episodes of Star Wars in a future not so far away;-).

Great capture Callie - he really looks like a warier of ancient times with helmet and armour. Very good dof, lots of details and interesting composition.

Lucky you having such attractive windows in your car - I was wondering what kind of grass he was sitting on until I read your note. By the way, he looks great in full size too.

Hello Callie,

What a fantastic macro this is! This is so close. The catchlight in the eye is perfect and the details are o so sharp. Really well done. Good POV and DOF. Maybe the top of the shield behind it´s neck is a little OE, but nothing serious. TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Wow, he is an amazing bug. Such incredible details. Looks like something out of the 'Alien' movies. Awesome macro Callie. Perfect! Thanks
