Polyommatus daphnis Meleager's Blue

The male is clear blue, with a narrow black border and a slightly scalloped hindwing. In many ways, however, the female is the more spectacular butterfly and the one more likely to catch the eye as being 'different'. As these pictures show, she is easily recognised by the scalloped edge of the hindwing, as well as by a very characteristic overall appearance. The male looks far more like a typical blue from the upperside, and has the characteristics of the species in a much milder form - notably less deep scalloping.

Wingspan: 33-37mm
Caterpillars host plants: Coronilla varia
Distribution: southern and central Europe, Minor Asia and Iran (in Poland and Germany on the northern border of its range)
Flight period: June to August
Habitat: dry meadows on calcareous rocks

A finely balanced composition Krzysztof, with the "Blue" and the violet of the thistle flower just within the limited focal region of an f/3.2. The finely OOF greeneries of the BG make this a beautiful image indeed!

Ogolnie rzecz biora zdjecie jest bardzo dobrej jakosci, ale osobiscie bardziej podobaja mi sie Twoje fotki z wiekszym kadrowaniem :) Tu jak dla mnie owad jest troche za maly, szczegolnie, ze wolna przestrzen nad nim jest dosc znacznych rozmiarow, a z kolei kwiat (ktory moglby warunkwac takie a nie inne kadrowanie) jest tez troche obciety.
No ale jak napisalem na wstepie - zdjecie technicznie na naprawde wysokim poziomie :)

A wonderful macro from the summer! You captured this fresh specimen of P. daphnis as it feeds with its wings closed on the Knapweed flower with excellent sharpness and lighting against a pleasing neutral BG and the composition is perfect.

Hello Krzysztof,
besides the huge numbers of icarus posted to TN, it becomes a pleasure to see sometimes also
other and not so common Lycaenidae, such as this daphnis. The minute hairs/scales are nicely seen.
It is a detail-rich picture of the butterfly as well as of the flower.
Colours, light and background are just perfect.

Hi, Krzysztof, again.
I like this shot too. You have reproduced this small butterfly and all its charming features with great exactness. I like that whole flower and buds are in frame too. They decorate the picture excellently as well as wonderful smooth BG. My compliments and TFS.

Very subtle colors for this little Blue, which is not so often shown. Very pleasant composition and fine pose of Polyommatus daphnis on the beautiful centaurea. Fine blurred background too.

I haven't seen this before, sorry to come late with my comment. There are many Blue's portraits presented on TN but this one stands out for at least three reasons. First, the excellent composition, even the colors of the flower and the fine tones in the butterfly match. Then the excellent light and suitable background. And what I like is the species rarely seen. Thanks for this one, Krzysztof!
