The Great White pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) breeding grounds at Djoudj National Park, Senegal.

The Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is a World Heritage Site in Senegal located at 1630'N, 1610'W.

The Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary lies on the southeast bank of the delta of the river Senegal in Senegal, north east of St-Louis. It provides a range of wetland habitats which prove very popular with migrating birds, many of which have just crossed the Sahara.

The Djoudj Sanctuary is a wetland of 16,000 ha, comprising a large lake surrounded by streams, ponds and backwaters. It forms a living but fragile sanctuary for some 1.5 million birds, with almost 400 species of birds. The most famous are pelicans and flamingos. About 5,000 white pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus nest here regularly.

Hello Michel,
In a month me and my wife are travelling to Senegal and Gambia for a holiday. But we don't come in Djoudj, but in Berbarie NP. I don't know why.
When I see this photo I still want to go now. Fantastic clarity in this photo, beautiful colours and good sharpness.
Regards,
Peter

What an amazing scene, Michel.
I have never seen so many pelicans together.
And it is fun to see the young ones in the foreground.
There are a few cormorants interspersed in the crowd.
Great composition.

Hallo Michel
Such a lovely view of these group of pelicans, each one doing their own business but each one just as beautiful as the other. I really like the individual poses and characteristics of each one of them, but must say the two in the air looking like aeroplanes is really beautiful. They have lovely and prominent features that are well seen and displayed, especially the beautiful wingspan and the long beaks. It is a great scene, an impressive image filled with great details. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
Anna
