Elephant Hawk-moth - Deilephila Elpenor

This common hawk-moth is found throughout Europe. It is widespread and common in England and Wales and also occurs in Ireland and Southern Scotland. The usual
habitats of this species are rough wasteland, woodland clearings and river valleys where the foodplant is abundant. The catperillar is green or greyish brown (seen here) with a network of find black lines and with prominent eye-spots on the fourth and fifth segments. The front segments of the caterpillar taper towards the head, sometimes giving the appearance of an elephants trunk. It feeds mainly on willow-herb (Epilobium) but will also eat the foliage of bedstraw (Galium), Fuchsia and other plants. Pupation takes place on the ground in a cocoon of silk, earth and leaf fragments. Moths are on th wing in summer and will visit flowers such as valerian (Valeriana) and honeysuckle (Lonicera).

(Words from 'Butterflies and Moths' - 1982. I apologise for any typos.)

This mini beast was in my Dads garden. He moved her from it's original spot to show me. I believe she was orignally sunning on a stone.
She was quite large (think fat fingers) and also feisty.

This should really have been taken with my other macro lens, but I didn't have it with me.

Today is my birthday, but I am posting this for my uncle Peter who we lost suddenly on Sunday, he was just 54. He was an amazing man, incredibly funny, and will be terribly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Hi Julia, This is a lovely shot. I love the different tones of brown and the sharpness is superb. You chose a nice DOF and composition, I like it. Apropos of my post on forum - I may post mine later, it is the green version and less colourful I think but still interesting to look at. TFS and very well done :)

I didn't read the bit about your birthday and uncle until now. I'm sorry you lost someone you clearly loved Julia. I hope you can enjoy your birthday as you know he would have wanted you to. *hug*

Hi Julia, very nice shot. I always think these look like a snake's head or sometimes a puppy! The focus is good on the head and very good exposure and composition. Good note too.

Well done, sorry to hear about your uncle.

Opened this pic of yours intending to see a snake of some sort. Great work. Excellent shot.

TFS, Kiran.

Hi Julia,
this is an excellent shot, showing the distinctive "dangerous beast" snake mimikry of an elephant hawkmoth caterpillar in a most impressive and straightforward way. Staring wide open eyes and an open mouth with two poison teeth are surprisingly well imitated, and you have shown that stunning phenomenon from a perfectly chosen point of view with crisp and clear details and rich colours. Great!
Thank you for sharing. Beautiful birthday posting, my congratulations!
And a beautiful dedication to your beloved uncle. Sorry for the great loss to you and your family.
All the best to you,
Peter
