Aglia tau (L.); Tau Emperor; Nagelfleck; La Hachette (Saturniidae).
The encounter came as a surprise: in an early evening in May I was descending the Cousimbert road on a bicycle when this male moth came bumbling by in flight. It is resting on an Oak tree but the forest is dominated by Beech and Spruce (980 m a.s.l.) . Big night moths are rarely seen flying during the day but the Tau Emperor is a known exception. Enjoy!

Hello Dietrich,
A welcome surprise seeing one of your images once again. I am always on the look out for the larger moths such as this one of yours. What a beautifully marked specimen it is with those colorful wing markings and large eye spots. I am sure you were thrilled just to have spotted it, let alone be able to photograph it for us. TFS.

Hi Dietrich,a very interesting memory from your archive,a lovely moth not often seen on TN and caught in a great way despite the difficult location and wings position too,i like it! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano
