This is a beautiful Satyridae that we have in Portugal. It is disappearing because we are damaging its environment by fire and intensive agriculture.
Usually it likes to land over rocks and stones where it feels safe and camouflaged.

It's very difficult to catch it with wings open because always close them when it lands. But the upper-side wings is beautiful too in black colour with several white stripes on the edge of the wings. We can see it only on fly.

In portuguese doesn't have a common name. In english is known as "Striped grayling".

The male is a bit bigger then the female and it has the white lines and dots more sharpened then the female.

Wingspan: 48mm till 56mm

In Portugal we can see it flying from later July till October, from 200 meters till 1200 meters of altitude.

It has only one generation over the year in Portugal. Hibernates over winter in a caterpillar.

Hallo Paulo,
Satyrines are my favourites. Although sometimes called the 'Browns', they develop so many different and beautiful colour patterns, as you present here by the underside pattern of H. fidia. Thank you for this excellent picture of a shy and threatened species. I know several localities of H. fidia in southern France, some of them are under pressure by human activities. I hope that this beautiful species will survive.
Peter

Hi Paulo,
Congratulations to a very good taking of this so difficult-to-catch species of the Hipparchia genus. You've done an excellent "job" here, providing us with a very successful specimen of this very shy Satyrina and a very good note,

Hello Paulo,
magnificent portrait of Hipparchia fidia L., this pretty, clearly and brightly marked Satyrid of the southwestern mediterranian. We do not have this species in Central Europe.
I love the soft and noble earthy colours on both the butterfly and its background. Thank you!
Best regards,
Peter
