Hi All,
Greeting from Clearwater Beach, Florida. On another trip at the moment, so I am catching up. Came down here for some R&R, and to photograph a friends sunset wedding on the beach. For this trip I rented the Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L zoom. So many members have this lens and get great results I wanted to try it out and have it for the extra reach to bring in the smaller shore birds. I usually sit or lay down and get as low as possible while doing these shots. It gives a much better perspective, and the birds will come much closer to you. Although the light was pretty bright and harsh here, it allowed for a very high shutter speed to freeze the action. This one was running to get by me as I was sitting right at the surf line.

This is a Willet - Catoptrophorus semipalmatus

A large sandpiper of the interior West and the ocean beaches, the Willet is known by its piercing calls and bright black-and-white flashing wings. It is the only North American sandpiper whose breeding range extends southward into the tropics.

Large shorebird.
Bold black-and-white wing pattern seen in flight.
Grayish overall.
Long straight bill.
Long, gray legs.

Size: 33-41 cm (13-16 in)
Wingspan: 70 cm (28 in)
Weight: 200-330 g (7.06-11.65 ounces)
Sex Differences
Sexes look alike, female slightly larger.

Call a loud, ringing "pill-will-willet."

hi Scott
voici une belle image dans le mouv, l'écume donne du mouvement, alors que l'oiseau donne de la profodeur à l'image. Superbe netteté et agréable teintes.

Hi Scott,

What a great capture. The rolling (little) waves are splendid. The hole photo is clear and full of fine details. Nice natural colors. Good POV, BG and DOF. A great compo. Regards and TFS Bob

Thanks a lot for your kind words on my new picture and also for your compassion on my current work situation.
I have missed a whole lot of your outstanding work on TN in the last couple of months.
It is a great pleasure to look at your latest one. The Willet looks superb against the BG that sort of matches up with its color.
Brilliantly sharp capture.
Thanks for sharing it warm regards.

Hello Scott,
The water looks a bit strange. It's really "frozen". Perfect details and sharpness. Great natural colours and POV. Very good DOF, composition and BG.

Hello Scott,
That's a very nice title and no doubt this Willet is getting a few showers. I've seen a Reef Heron running along the wash like this.
Excellent capture showing sharp details of bird and the waves. Fine colours and well composed.

Hi Scott.
Very interesting note. Your experience brings a brilliant result. Superb work, amazing scene and quality of the picture. Great clear colours, and terrific details of the image. Excellent freezing of the scene. Bravo. Excellent job.

Hi Scott,
So are you planning to buy the lens are more opting for a prime. I am sure that a more tele lens will do your style of photography justice.
I really love the frozen action here. It gives a great feel to the force of the water and what it does to such a small but sturdy bird. The details in the bird are awesome and its slightly scared expression is wonderful. I am a bit in doubt about your POV. It feels just a bit too high.

Nicely done, Scott. I think the shutter speed is perfect for this baby -- captured the action with just enough DoF. I like your angle and his position in the frame, too. I don't agree with Niek about you being too high, not only because it looks fine to me but because it looks to me like you were already at beach level.
P.S. I hope you had fun with the rental. It's such a nice option to try lenses out and to get equipment for those unusual things. I was thinking of a rental for my trip to Yellowstone last week, but it isn't possible in my small town.

Hi Scott,
Excellent capture of this Willet in the sea. Well done.

Hi Scott,
Super clarity in this wonderful action shot.
Great to see you posting some more of your fantastic images. It sounds like your having fun with your R&R down there in Florida. :)

Hi Scott

Long time, no chat :)
It's nice to hear you are travelling and also helping some friends, plus also trying on some new gadgets :)
I think you did great to rent that excelent lens...it did give you the extra "comfort" and reach here.
I really like the way you managed to fereze the water here and therefore allow us to see those fine pieces of sand it is carrying around with the small waves.
The bird looks great, too - very nicely detailed and perfectly exposed.
All-in-all a wonderful job!

Take care and TFS

Hello Scott,
This fellow seems to enjoy the chilling effect provided by the sea!
Or maybe he's hoping for some food to be washed ashore...
A well composed image with good details in the plumage!

Hi Scott

I almost shouted "Run baby run" for this little bird. The water and the movement seem so real on my screen that for a moment I was concerned that it was going to dump the little beach runner.

Lovely composition, amazing action, great colours, great exposure control, and spot on DOF.

Very well done and TFS.
