Hi all TN friends, I’m back after 3 months in Cyprus where I have wintering like the birds do.
This is my first post for 2011.
The is a Laudakia stellio ,subspecies cypriaca, I think the English name is Star Lizard.
I took this outside Ayia Napa in Kavo Gkreko NP, I spent a day there together with the TN member and great photographer Christodoulos , a kind and fine man with great knowledge of the fauna and nature.
He also helped me to ID the lizard, this was the first time I saw the beautiful and shy animal.
I hope you like this portrait of the lizard.

Info from Wikipedia.

A stellion (Laudakia stellio), also known as a hardim or star lizard,[1] is a species of agamid lizard found in Greece, Southwest Asia, and Northeast Africa. Like many agamas, stellions can change color to express their moods. They bask on stone walls, rocks and buildings, and also on trees. They are usually found in rocky habitats, and are quite shy, being very ready to dive into cracks to hide from potential predators.
The name "stellion" comes from Latin stellio, stēlio (stelliōn-, stēliōn-), which referred to any spotted lizard, from stella, star.

Excellent portrait with fantastic clarity, focus and splendid colours!!!

Hello Gert,
A wonderful portrait captured with amazing details and excellent sharpness. I also like natural colours, POV and OOF BG. Well done!

Hallo Gert
And your 1st post after 3 months is absolutely beautiful and such a delight to look at. The glint in the lizard's eye is lovely and I like the way it looks at you or your camera. The photography of the lizard's scales is absolutely praiseworthy as it is seen with great clarity. I also favour the blurred patterns in the background. Thanks for sharing and welcome back. Best regards.

Gert, I'm sure you had a wonderful holiday in the temprate climes of Cyprus. Great to have you back with a gem of a picture from that lovely part of the world!
This is the kind of nature photography that used to inspire rank amateurs like me some years ago when TN was the best in the world. You and many others of your calibre were the role models for us at that time. Sadly, most of them have now moved elsewhere.
Thanks for giving a glimpse of that era through this masterly image of a Star Lizard.
Hope you are keeping well.
Best regards.

Hej Gert!
Welcome back!
A very fine close portait of a male L. stellio cypriaca.
The head and neck are well portrayed with superb sharpness, colours and set in a perfect composition that suits the lateral POV. The BG is nicely OOF too.
Thanks and have a good weekend,

Hej Gert and welcome home!!
I recognize this fellow that you captured very nicely here! Fantastic details and colours and well framed too. When we stayed at Paphos there were lots of these on the cliffs just below the hotel, it was great to watch their behaviour.
You're so lucky to have escaped this horrible long winter in Sweden!!
TFS and have a nice weekend, Ulla

Hello Gert, beautiful first floor of this ... a living dinosaur, a beautiful image with light and incredible detail. All the best, Paul

Excellent close-up photograph with great detail. regards yiannis

Bonjour Gert,

It has been a long time. But you're back with a beautifull shot. Extremly sharp, well exposed, splendid "bohkey" even at F/14. The contrasty light render a felling of harsh condition. Slendid image and TFS.

Hello Gert,

I'm very glad to see you back on TN :)

And you come back with a wonderful picture of this Star Lizard!!! WOW!!! What a fantastic image showing us so many details on the reptile skin. The composition is solid, anchoring the animal firmly on the lower right corner of the frame. Il like also the bg sharing similar colors with the lizard.

A great pic and TFS!

Cyprus is an excellent place for wintering, I think. Your shots are the best proof of it. Superb portrait of an amazing reptile. I like composition of the shot, impressive head turning and glance of the model. Brilliant lights and details. BG is also splendid as well as common colour palette. Well done and best regards.
