Cecropia series:
It's the first pic in a series on the big, (7 cm wingspan) night active Cecropia moth (Saturniidae: Hyalophora cecropia). Cocoons could be bought from a dealer. I let the adults hatch in a cage, copulate and lay eggs. The pic is from a male, characterized by the bushy antennae, the all important "nose" of insects. With these antennae males can smell the pheromone emanating from a female over great distances at night.
Cecropia moths occur in a good part of the U.S. and Maritime Canada. The cocoons are hanging in maple or other trees and can be spotted easily during winter time.
I took the slide with a flash, scannded it, removed the grain of the background by blurring it in PS, increased exposition and sharpened slightly.

Hi Dietrich,
great macro-shot.
Very sharp, great details, and beautiful colors...
A bit noisy at BG, especially near the edges of butterfly wings....

Hello Dietrich,
WHat a splendid moth! I don't think I've seen that before. Excellent capture even though it is old and obviously scanned. Very sharp details and fabulous colours!
Many thanks, Ulla

Hallo Dietrich,
Superb close up of a moth with vibrant colors... There is some weird texture in the background but who cares after all these years? Excellent job.
Best wishes,
Hakan

OK, Dietrich, according to my own principles, I shouldn't be commenting on this one, but here I was tempted to make an exception.
This is a spectacular post of this N. American Saturniid. Your scanned slide is sharp and does the moth justice. This is a joy to see.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Beautifull shot of great butterfly Dietrich. TFS

Hallo Dieter,
Tu as plus d'un tour dans ton sac!

Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

Wonderful image Dietrich mainly for the colors and sharpness captured of this so attractive species of moth.
The depth and the dark bottom collaborate in enhancing the details of the insect.
Excellent post processed of the old image.
Thank you and greetings... Ricardo

Gorgeous colors. Nice shot.

Hello Dietrich,
this moth is huge! The details and the colors of this moth are wonderful. You captured it very well, the DOF is great the entire 7cm wing span is in focus.
TFS..Sky

Hallo Dietrich,
Sabine - wishnugaruda
