While a dozen other safari jeeps were stopping near by to look at a lion, I have this scene all to myself befor this family of four headed back into the bushes.

1. Elephants live in a highly organized social structure referred to as a matriarchal herd. The herd is typically composed of up to ten females and their young. All of the females in the herd are directly related to the matriarch, who is typically the oldest and largest female. Males beyond the age of maturity are with the herd only during mating.

2. African elephants are capable of making a wide variety of vocal sounds, such as grunts, purrs, bellows, whistles, and the obvious trumpeting. Elephants are also capable of making low frequency sounds that are below the human range of hearing; this allows wandering individuals within the herd as well as several different herds to stay in direct contact over distances of many miles.

3. The most obvious characteristic of elephants, besides their massive size, is their trunk. The trunk is nothing more than an elongation of their nose and upper lip. Besides being used for breathing and smelling it is also used as an appendage, much like an arm or hand. Elephants are capable of pulling up to 11.5 liters (3 gallons) of water into the trunk to be sprayed into the mouth for drinking or onto the back for bathing. They also use two finger-like projections that are at the tip to manipulate small objects and to pluck grasses.

4. Female elephants are one of the few mammals other than humans who live beyond their reproductive years. The typical cow will end her reproductive period between 45-50 years. During this post-reproductive time she assists with the care of other young.

A very well composed capture. I like the color tones, scene you captured, layers, DOF and the details. TFS
Best wishes,

hello Way

WOW, great and beautiful animals in a wonderful African landscape,
very fine POV and DOF, excellent sharpness and details,
and i love the eye-contact of one with you, TFS

Hallo Way
I have not seen you around the site for quite a while and it is good to see a posting from you. A very good family photo of this herd of elephants, and it is lovely to see them in their natural environment. I love how you managed to capture the whole family in one frame. It is a real homely scene and it creates the feeling of warmth. Pity the little one is hidden away in the long grass. The smaller ones are always the cutest. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards

Wow, but this is a special photo. The levels are superb and I like your framing which gives it the feel of a painting. TFS.

Hi Way, this is another very good group shot. The family of elephants is well placed. The detail on them and the grasses around them is very good. Very nicely composed. I'd say you got the better deal between you and the others shooting the lion.

Thanks, John

Hi Way

Wow, two lovely shots in one. A great landscape of the African savanna and a family gathering of the African Savanna Elephants. This photo has great depth, but at the same time up-close detail of the 4 pachyderms. I just love it.

Although perhaps not perfectly divided into 1/5 zones horizontally the main point is that the photo contains 5 zones which goes with the guidelines for landscape photography. The area just in front of the animals, the area right behind them, the area behind the trees, the mountain area, and then finally the sky. As far as the elephant goes, it is nice that you capture 4 animals of varying size, from baby, to juvenile, to young adult, and big momma herself. Unfortunately I cannot see what camera you used or what the settings was, but you managed to capture great details throughout the entire range of the shot and the colour tones are very natural.

Good work and TFS.

hi Way Lim,

Hello Way, what a super shot you've done! Beautiful composition and a fantastic technique, well done, thanks!

Hello Way,
Neat work here. Even though at a distance you seem to have been able to capture the details on the elephants. The different layers and their colors are interestingand remove any scope for monotony.
Great work!!
