Desert Eagle Owl Bubo ascalaphus
also known as Pharaoh Eagle owl
formerly classified as a subspecies of Eagle Owl

this picture was taken in the early evening, when the sun had already disappeared behind the mountains. I shot a lot of pictures using 800 and 400 ISO speed ratings, the 400 giving the much better result but quite a few were blurred due to camera motion (this one was taken at 1/40 sec exposure time with f/4.0)
the colors are still a bit reddish and could easily be corrected by photoshop giving the illusion of a mid day picture, but this reddish tint gives the correct ambiance (in fact it was even darker than on the picture) and I personally prefer to keep the ambiance rather than overcorrecting everything
BUT all workshop and other views about this are welcome
Thanks
Tom

Hi Tom,
What a funny pose of this owl. He looks like he is puffing his chest out.
Nice clean shot that shows the subject well without any distractions.
I like the monochromatic palette.

Hi Tom,
wonderful creature, the self assured pose, the evening light is telling of things to come to a night active bird. With 1/40 sec it is a miracle you wrought, Tom. The reddish background goes well with a desert environment. And the cherry on the pie is the presentation of a species not often seen anywhere. Bravo, Tom, and thanks for the picture and the note describing the circumstances for the shot.
Best regards
Dietrich

Dear Tom,
I do like Owls, they are incredibly intelligent (The owl was the symbol of Athene, the Greek goddess of knowledge) - when we lived on the farm - it was most interesting to watch them silently hunting...

Your owl has a rather unusual pose - the bird sits so straight up, as it was wearing a corset! Was it watching something? I am also interested to know, if the background was rock or desert sand. Do you perhaps know, if the whitish groove in the middle of the bird's chest serve a purpose?
I think - it would be a shame to ruin this perfect photo by photoshopping it. I am sure, the barring of the chest as well as the sharp markings on the back serve as camouflage!

I looked at some photos of the Desert Eagle Owl, and the majority have a background of reddish rock/mountains or reddish sand; et voila, that proves my point of camouflage. Furthermore, most owls sleep during the day, somewhere hidden e.g. a cave, hence in the evening the only time to photograph it. Last not least, the scenery around the red sea HAS this reddish hue...

Overall, thanks to your superior, photographic knowledge you have created a perfect image of the Desert Eagle Owl: focus, exposure, depth of field, background everything perfect - not an easy accomplishment after sunset.
Enjoy the rest of your week,
Kind regards
Ingrid

Hi Tom,
A great result given the low s. speed and ISO used.
I agree about retaining the original ambience hue that matches the time of the day when it was taken.
A lot of character of this desert bird.
Thanks a lot for share it,
JM
