Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Magnoliopsida
Order: Ranunculales
Family: Ranunculaceae
Genus: Caltha
Species: C. palustris
Caltha palustris commonly known as Kingcup or Marsh Marigold (also known as Calthus palustris syn. Trollius paluster Krause) belongs to the Ranunculaceae (buttercup family). It is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere (Europe including Iceland and Arctic Russia, temperate and Arctic Asia, and North America). It grows in wet, boggy places, such as marshes, fens, ditches and wet woods. It becomes most luxuriant in partial shade, but is rare on peat. In the UK, it is probably one of the most ancient British native plants, surviving the glaciations and flourishing after the last retreat of the ice, in a landscape inundated with glacial meltwaters.
The plant is a herbaceous perennial growing to 80 cm tall. The leaves are rounded to kidney-shaped, 3-20 cm across, with a bluntly serrated margin and a thick, waxy texture. Stems are hollow. The flowers are yellow, 2-5 cm diameter, with 4-9 (mostly 5) petaloid sepals and many yellow stamens; they are borne in early spring to late summer. The flowers are visited by a great variety of insects for pollen and for the nectar secreted from small depressions, one on each side of each carpel. Carpels form into green sac-like follicles to 1cm long, each opening to release several seeds.
Caltha palustris is a highly polymorphic species, showing continuous and independent variation in many features. Forms in the UK may be divided into two subspecies: Caltha palustris subsp. palustris, and Caltha palustris subsp. minor.
It is sometimes considered a weed in clayey garden soils, where every piece of its root will survive and spread. In warm free-draining soils, it simply dies away.
As is the case with many members of the Ranunculaceae, all parts of the plant can be irritant or poisonous. Skin rashes and dermatitis have been reported from excessive handling of the plant.

Hello Luciano,
A wonderful presentation of this lovely Marsh Marigold. We have some growing in a bog near my home and I have taken a few shots of them myself.
What I find interesting about this particular photo is that the bloom is partially submerged in the water, which I have never seen before. I assume that the water had risen sometime shortly before you took this photo?
Excellent detail and DOF achieved with beautiful coloration. Well done!!

Hi Luciano,
Excellent macro with great details, beautiful colours and a very nice composition. Well done!

Hallo Luciano
Very eye-catching! The presentation as a whole is pleasant, the camerawork just great and all the additionals in the image just right, especially the one water droplet on the petal. The patterns the water makes is so beautiful to look at. Thanks for sharing a delightful macro, filled with striking colour and detail. Best regards.

Hi Luciano,
Beautiful photo of this Ranunculus Flower, TFS!

Ciao Luciano,
Grazie e complimenti
Buona giornata
Ciao Maurizio

Ciao Luciano,
A nice one to remind us that spring is not too far away!
This is aan excellent image from your archives showing that Kingcup flowers can be covered by water in the spring. Excellent POV, sharpness and colours and I like the water movement around the flower.
Thanks and kind regards,

Bonjour Luciano,
Une très belle image de Caltha palustris, une fleur qu'il n'est pas facile de bien photographier. De manifiques reflets de lumière sur l'eau et des perles sur les pétales rendent cette image très artistique aussi. Beau cadrage, excellente netteté et présentation.

Ciao Luciano,
I'm amazed by the fantastic scene presented here. Caltha palustris with its natural habit - in swamp! The beautiful yellow tone of the flower and the well blurred "water textures" make this photo a remarkable one! A breathtaking macro, undoubtly the best photo of the species on TN! Although, what ruins the impression a bit is the canvas. It's very thick - I'd like to see more of the image and less of the frame! The solid inner one would have been enough by my opinion.
Tfs, friendly regards, Ladislao

Bonjour Luciano !
