[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio)
In photo: young bird.

The male is unmistakably colourful with a red back, mostly black tail, blue-grey rump and head and a characteristic black highwayman's mask. Females and juveniles are duller brown but still have the heavy beak and a suggestion of a mask. Most importantly, they have prominently scaly underparts.
Breeds on heaths and commons with thorn bushes and gorse.
No longer an annual breeding species in Britain, the species occurs as a spring and autumn passage migrant, mainly on the east and south coasts. Migration sites such as Portland Bill, the Isles of Scilly, Shetland and Flamborough Head are virtually guaranteed a few individuals eaach autumn.
Widespread and relatively easy to find in many parts of Europe.
