COMMON GLIDER (NEPTIS SAPPHO)

A delicate butterfly, gently glides through dappled light in woodland and along woodland edges.

Identification & Similar species: Resembles the white admirals and the Hungarian glider, Limenitis sp. & Neptis rivularis. A white band in the upperside forewing cell and two on the hindwing separate the species.

Distribution & Flight: NE Italy and eastwards. Sporadic in the Balkans to north Greece. Double brooded in May/ June and July/ August.

Habitat & Behaviour: Open woodland, clearings and woodland edges in dappled shade. Feeds on flowers, Euphorbias for example, and takes salts from mud.

Hi Marius,
Fantastic shot, all parts of the butterfly are tack sharp, even the antennae. Great colors and exposure, perfect shallow depth to gain the viewer's attention on to the butterfly only. Fabulous image. About the ID: I think this is Neptis sappho, not N. hylas. Distribution: from Central Europe (Austria / Italy) to Japan, through the whole Asian continent. Have a look on this, please: http://jasius.hu/lepidopterology/nepsap.html
Kind regards from Ireland, László

Hi Marius,i agree with Laszlo, this is a Neptis sappho, the Pallas' sailer or common glider, is a nymphalid butterfly found in Central Europe, Russia, India and other parts of temperate Asia and Japan, but avalaible in the north-easter Italy too. Wonderful gift for me that i never seen that in my life live, and the quality is fantastic as usual. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano
