Hello my friends,

My gratitude and respect for correctly identifying this species goes to Ivan (Argus) and Ulla (Uleko) who kindly offered their help. Thank you so much!

Old note:

Although I wanted to post this picture long ago, I kept postponing it because I failed in finding the correct ID. My todays search however led to some results but I'm still in doubt about the correct ID. I was almost certain that the name of this butterfly was Northern Wall Brown Lasiommata petropolitana (Fabricius) but reading further about this species made things more confusing as many sources stated that it lives in the northern part of Europe, not in hot areas from Greece. Similar species like the Lasiommata maera and Lasiommata megera didn't match either. This is why I won't post anything about any of the mentioned species. I'm afraid I have to rely on someone who is more experimented with butterflies, so please, if you have any clue what this species could be, I'll be grateful for a short note.

I decided to post this picture because it is one of my favorites. A shame some parts of the wings aren't as sharp as I'd like. The composition and colors are well worth posting.

The Large Wall Brown (Lasiommata maera) - 2nd. gen.

Scientific classification

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Satyrinae
Genus: Lasiommata
Species: L. maera (Linnaeus, 1758)

Description

This butterfly has a wingspan of 37-50 mm. They are a little larger than Lasiommata megera and their upperwings are gray-brown. On the forewings they have a larger orange-brown area separated by a dark brown area. In the orange area close to the wing tip there is a black spot with two white nuclei surrounded by a lighter area. On the hind wing, tere are 3-4 such spots but they're much smaller. The underwings have the same colors as the Lasiommata megera. On the light brown hind wings there are 1-6 spots with black centers and surrounded by black and white outlines.

Caterpillar

The 28 mm long caterpillars are blueish-green with two darker stripes on the back. These stripes have a white edge on each side. On each side there are also two longitudinal lighter colored lines. They feed on Festuca ovina, Calamagrostis epigeios and Holcus lanatus.

Similar species

Lasiommata petropolitana
Lasiommata megera

Distribution

From N Africa to almost entire Europe to W Siberia.

Flight Time

They come in two generations, from end April to June and from June to September. In the north and in colder areas they come in one generation from mid June to end August and in Africa there is also a third generation.

Photo Location

I took this picture on the beautiful Agios Gordis Beach in Kerkyra, Greece. The weather was fine, clear sky, almost no wind and the atmosphere was kind of hazy, sometimes with invisible horizon line. This caused the sunlight to be rather diffuse yet still strong. The temperature was about 42 degr. Celsius.

Hello Eddie,
The ID here is not that easy but I think we can exclude the Northern wall Brown. This is the large Wall brown, L. maera, (2nd gen).
This slightly worn specimen is sharply and very well presented in a fine composition on the lantana flower.
Well done and TFS!
Ivan

Hello Eduard,
I'm not quite certain which one of the three possible this is - I've called in Ivan to help! Really superb capture anyway showing great sharpness and fine colours. I love the fine pose on the Lantana flowers, also sharply in focus. Fine soft background and an excellent composition.
TFS and have a nice weekend, Ulla

Hi Eduard,
Outstanding shot of this beautiful butterfly with such lovely colours and textures on its wings. Fabulous lighting and you have captured a majestic pose on the colourful lantanas. The soft coloured BG enhances the beauty and highlights the subjects well here. Excellent POV and a precise DOF. A superb composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Eduard,
Très belle et fine image de la Lasiommata Maera. C'est un papillon que je connais bien, mais je n'ai jamais eu la chance de le photographier sur une fleur aussi colorée que sur ton image. Composition bien équilibrée aussi.
Bonne journée
Anne

Hello Eduard

Striking shot splendid colours and details!!

Best Regards

Hallo Eddie,
ästhetisch sehr ansprechendes, überaus fein durchgezeichnetes und nuancenreich gefärbtes Portrait des Braunauges. Herrlich lichtdurchflutete Pastelltöne, künstlerisch vollendete Komposition. Wunderbar.
Mit Dank und herzlichen Grüßen,
Peter

Fantastic post, I like the way you portrait butterflys a lot. Nice overall sharpness but still blur on the background and very fine colours. I thought you would use a macro lens but to my surprise you made it from a bigger distance. Good job, Reina
