[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The other day I posted a shot of a pair of gulls standing on a rock. In the notes I suggested they were a large bird. This shot puts that statement into a better perspective. This is a Pacific Gull sitting on a lamp on Granite Island at Victor Harbour. This isn’t a small lamp, it’s a large bird. It is like looking at a small goose.

ID from: Simpson K. and Day N. (2004), Field Guide to the Birds of Australia, Penguin Books, Camberwell.

Workflow for this shot was as follows:
Shot in Raw - Adjusted NEF shadows and highlights
Adjusted levels – very slight
Adjusted curves – “S curve” for contrast
Used overlay layer with 5% opacity brush for “burning and dodging”, used 10% for eye
Over applied Smart Sharpen on a separate layer
Used layer mask to tone it down for selective sharpening
Saved as tiff
Cropped, reduced image size, re-sharpened (slight), framed and saved as jpeg for this post

Different. If I didn't know it was a street lamp, I'd say it was the strangest kamode with skylight bottom I've ever seen ;}

Hi John, Very good capture of this large gull. It looks almost like a small albatross at a glance. Excellent details and colours visible. Good timing for this classic pose. TFS. Murray.

attention a l'exposition qui est un peu trop presente ici a cause de la pose de 1/90.

Is there nesting activity here John? Either that or sunbathing eh! I like the way you also included the lamp which gives an excellent idea about the size of this sizable bird! That is much harder to see in your previous shot, so this is an excellent follow-up. Tfs, Jay

Hello John,

I know that shooting birds are all candid but this is one real candid shot of this gull. The lamp looks like it was tailor made for her.

Good details of the white area which is rather difficult when shot against the sky. I had a few white birds which never make it anywhere. I keep looking at this picture and I hope you won't mind me adding this to my personal theme.
