Well the title says it all. This is (finally) my 200th posting (a very long time coming since getting ill) and it is also Christmas Day.

So to everyone who celebrates Christmas, Merry Christmas.

I have been keeping my eye out on the common recently in an attempt to get another photo similar to this one which I took 3 years ago on a point and shoot digital camera. I wanted something that I could enlarge (min A4), the original is just not up to it (or my editting skills are not. It was taken on a 2M pixel camera).

We have been suffering some fairly bad fog in the south of England recently, but this particular day (Saturday) it had lifted during the day. It came back with avengence during the night. However, there was enough of a sunset to play with the fog on the common I live on, so grabbing the camera and remembering to wrap up warm (I am still feeling the cold and loosing weight) I was able to slip the wellies on and dash the whole 20m from my front door to this.

This was taken at least 30mins after the offical sunset and was one of the last photos I took that day. I was starting to need a tripod at this point (I have lost mine, however Father Christmas delivered a beautiful Manfrotto one with gear pano head today, so I won't have to go without again).

So F/4.0, ISO 200 (could have gone higher but hands were getting numb) and +1EV resulted in this which I am quietly pleased with (duely cursed it now).

It was really very nice to be able to get out and take some photos again. My health is better than it was, I have more energy, but am still only 66%. I have a date for my op, so will be disappearing on the 2nd of Jan for a couple of weeks.

Anyhow, this is full frame and uneditted (except usual resize, USM, and border).

Best wishes, Emma

Hi Emma

How nice to hear from you and what a splendid occasion!
Firstly, a big congratulations for your 200th post! And what a beauty it is!
I love this scene and i think it was worth the long wait :)
The 3 different shapes of trees in the FG are superb and their silhouettes really stand out wonderfully from the rest of the scene. That fact was definitely enhanced by the great mist behind them that gave you some extra contrast and brightness in the lower part of the frame and compensated the lovely sky well.
Brilliant composition using the sure of the thirds, spot-on exposure (you didn't use any filters, did you?) and most charming colors in the sky thanks to the lovely sunset.

I'm glad to hear you are feeling better, the best of luck with the op and allow me to also wish you and all your loved ones a warm and sincere Merry Christmas and also the best of everything of what the world has to offer in the year to come!

Happy holidays! and TFS

Hi Emma,
Congratulations on your 200th posting, you have a gallery full of lovely photos. Colors in the sky, silhoutte of the trees, composition and the view are very good.
Hope you'll feel 100% better soon... TFS
Greetings and a Merry Christmas,

Emma, you have created a highly artistic, late sunset image despite health and weather problems. The image is extremely well composed with all the elements in it very finely balanced.
May the year 2008 bring you sound health and a cheerful spirit!
I am sure you would be absolutely fit after the op.
All the best and do take care.

Hi Emma. I see you answered my question in your note re: your health and surgery. I will be thinking about you on the 2nd. It will be good to finally get that behind you and start moving forward again.

Congratulations on #200. When I start looking at some of our statistics I am really impressed... it's a lot of photos and an amazing number of critiques.

I like your sunset. The silhouetted trees are nice against the colorful sky. It does lack a little of the magic of the original one (the link you provided) I can see why you want to duplicate that one. I have never been able to go back to a location and get anywhere near the same shot.

TFS & I'll be looking forward to the next 200!

Hi, dear Emmer.
First of all I wish you the best health. I hope out love for your pictures and warm feelings to you will help you overcome all difficulties. Thanks for charming shot and greetings. My congratulations on 200th post.

It is so delicate and nice. Amazing tender colour palette, art @[email protected] sharpness and brilliant POV and composition. Bravo and TFS.

Hi Emma,
Congratulations on the 200th upload. Eventhough it is not the wanted mountain winter view, the common does make for a beautiful scenery as well. It is funny to see the colors change so quickly for a more warm orange to the cooler pinks. The layer of fog low to the ground is very beautiful and something we see here a lot as well. If they are formed above a marsh area we call the white women, more as in witches. They would call for you and draw you into the marsh area. Ofcouse these are ancient myth.
Your control on the exposure is again impressive. Perfect exposure on both sky an land.
