Temnostoma bombulans

This hover-fly (family Syrphidae) is a mimic of the true wasp - Dolichovespula media. It only lacks the long thick black antennae and orange-yellow legs of the wasp. In order to imitate the wasp, the hoverfly uses its first pair of black legs as antennae and keeps waving them as if they were antennae and not legs.

It is a hoverfly that is usually found in humid conditions in deciduous forests where the larva feed on decaying hard wood and rotting logs. The adults visit flowers in open spaces and meadows and fly from late May to late July. It is a species that is only found in the south-eastern part of Sweden, while presumably common in Europe.

This was captured from a distance of 30 cm with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Its Swedish name is 'Ängstigerfluga' = ‘Meadow Tiger Fly’.

Hi Ulla.
I have never met this species. It is very attractive and upper POV is very nice to show all its features. Details are very nice and leaves create a wonderful canvas for this little beauty. Well done and kind wishes.

Hi Ulla,
Very nice hover-fly taken from a nice angle. I think because of the 1/50 we can see some movement on the head. Very good colours and use of the light.
Happy new year to you and your family.
