Swallowtail - Papilio machaon

A while ago I posted this same Swallowtail as she was busy laying eggs. Here she’s showing the full spread of her wings while she was having a brief rest.

Papilio machaon was named by Carl Linnaeus in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae in 1758.

It is a butterfly that is declining in Europe as damp meadows are rapidly disappearing.

Hello Ulla,
Beautiful photo of this Swallowtail with open wings. The sahrpness and details are amazing. Very nice natural colours. Good composition.

Hi Ulla,
very lively, dynamic, reasonably well detailed cropping, showing our good friend the old world swallowtail either in the action of landing or taking off. Happy to report that the species seems to be spreading in many parts of Central Europe again, doing well also in dry habitats - as long as practices like sealing landscape with concrete, dumb reforestation of open grassland, fertilization of meadows, bringing out tons of pesticides in order to mass produce apples and wine are kept under control. Still optimistic about that, I remember times when it was significantly worse than now.
With thanks, and best regards,

Hallo Ulla,

Hello Ulla,
You have chosen a difficult point of view to take a picture of this beautiful Swallowtail. Always a pleasure to see this striking species. The green leaves here give a good color-contrast. Well chosen framing too.
In our regions we see again more of these butterflies.
Kind regards

Hello Ulla,

And soon it will be butterfly season again..!
This lovely insect is well framed and the total colour palette makes up a beautiful scene...
Great details in the butterfly and I notice the silky-crisp wings, very attractive!

Hi Ulla.
I cannot pass this wonderful shot. Selected POV is simply amazing and not so usual. Wingspread is looked more expressively at this view. Surrounding are very nice and supplement the butterfly image very well. I like wide DOF, excellent details across the frame. It is a pity that this species is disappearing in your country. Warm wishes and TFS.
