Whooper Swans - Cygnus cygnus

Today was a very cold but sunny day so we took a short trip in the car and found lots of Whooper Swans together with Greylag Geese, Bean Geese and White-fronted Geese seeking food among the stubble of a cornfield.

The Whooper Swan is similar in appearance to the Bewick's Swan except it is larger and has a more angular head shape and a more variable bill pattern that always shows more yellow than black (Bewick's Swans have more black than yellow).

Whooper swans require large areas of water to live in, especially when they are still growing, because their body weight cannot be supported by their legs for extended periods of time. The whooper swan spends much of its time swimming, straining the water for food, or eating plants that grow on the bottom.

Whooper swans have a deep honking call and, despite their size, are powerful fliers. They can migrate many hundreds of miles to their wintering sites in northern Europe and eastern Asia. They nest across the whole length of Sweden and in spring they gather in their thousands at Lake Tysslingen in central Sweden.

This was taken from a distance of about 25 metres with the camera resting on the car window frame. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hello Ulla,
You in Scania don't have snow. In my countryside came back third time winter and now we have snow almost until knees.
These large birds I see only high in the sky in early spring and in the end of autumn.
Regards, Pawel

Ciao Ulla, fantastic capture of a lot of different birds, lovely composition with excellent sharpness, fine details and splendid natural colors, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Ulla,
What a great composition. A lot of birds. Splendid details, colors and excellent clarity. Superb sharpness and very good focus.

Hi Ulla,
I didn't know the swans were staying this far north in winter. I thought that we Dutch were sometimes even too far north. It is therefore very interesting to learn that these birds do stay in Sweden.

As for the quality of the photo. Getting so much detail for a pretty good distance is impressive. I do think that when you add just a little more sharpness the photo becomes even better.

Bonjour Ulla,
Composition judicieuse valorisant bien les sujets en les opposant à d'autres oiseaux.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.

I agree with Lou on this one that this is a great composition with all the many birds. The colours is so natural and the details captured beautiful, especially of your 2 main subjects the Whooper Swans. I very much like the sunlight in the scene. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Good contrast of the huge swans and geese, good composition and the pose of the swans are admirable. Interesting to see feeding here and away from water. tfs.

Hello Ulla,
A very vivid shot, full of life and probalby of cackle! Interesting to see Swans and Geese among the stubbles of a cornfield. It gives to the shot a graphical aspect. Somehow funny bird-picture. Thanks for it!

Hi Ulla.
It is a pleasure to see nice shots taken by Ivan and you at the same place. I am impressed with similarity and the highest quality of both pictures one of them is taken by compact cameras and another one – by advanced DSLR. It is a sign the skill of both photographers. I like pictured scene a lot. All birds create an attractive group and every of them is reproduced precisely. Especially I like exact exposure and nice reproduction of feathers of swans. High stubble as a surroundings decorate the scene perfectly. Thanks a lot and kind wishes.
