European paper wasp - Polistes gallicus

Paper wasps gather fibers from dead wood and plant stems, which they mix with saliva, and use to construct water-resistant nests made of gray or brown papery material.

The nests of most true paper wasps are characterized by having open combs with cells for brood rearing, and a petiole, or constricted stalk, that anchors the nest. Paper wasps secrete a chemical which repels ants, which they spread around the base of the anchor to prevent the loss of eggs or brood.

Polistine paper wasps will generally only attack if they themselves or their nest are threatened.

Most wasps are beneficial in their natural habitat, and are critically important in natural biocontrol. Paper wasps feed on nectar, and other insects, including caterpillars, flies, and beetle larvae, and they are often considered to be beneficial by gardeners.

This was captured late in the day in the wetlands of Scala Kaloni on Lesvos while lookiong for frogs! The image has been cropped slightly and sharpened.

Hello Ulla,
I never know they called it paper wasp! Such a exciting encounter and you have composed it in excellent details. The yellow dark stripes are really catchy and attractive.

Such a beautiful close up study of the wasp and its "paper" hive Ulla, a majestic insect intimately known by me, so intimately in fact that I can still feel some of its numerous stings on my face, hands, etc...

Hello Ulla
Beautiful photo with excellent composition, nice colours and good sharpness.

Ciao Ulla. An interesting dynamic one MF! Bit noised and OE.

Lucky you to find this nest of paper wasp with lone wasp guarding, well captured. Had to very careful approaching the nest of wasp as a slight disturbance they sure attack you, as it happened to me once but managed to escape with couple of stings. tfs.

What amazing pictures you take with your compact camera, Ulla!
I am still unfamiliar with my little Canon and use it sparingly, mostly for taking wedding pictures in auto mode :)!
This Paper Wasp building a nest (is that a wrong term to use?) looks wonderful while it works. I like the very natural colours in this close-up shot.
Thanks and regards.

A bit of a camera shake and noise on the background, but the pose of the little soldier ready to defend his home is simply overtaking everything else, I think! Have a great weekend Ulla!

Hi Ulla.
Paper is really looks like paper :). I like how well you have reflected honeycomb and wasp. Details are ultimate as well as colours. However, I am also impressed with splendid BG. Its smoothness and deep dark coours are great and underlines the main subject perfectly. I also welcome impressed centered composition of the image. It is so suitable for your case. Well done and best wishes.

Hi Ulla,

Beautiful capture of wasp and nest!

All the best,

A pesar del excesivo brillo captas perfectamente la escena , captando bien el motivo principal: la avispa. Un bonito trabajo.
Saludos Ulla.
