Liverwort – Hepatica nobilis

This little flower is a true sign of spring here. It is found mostly in deciduous or mixed forests and is most common in southern Sweden. On a trip to the Baltic island of Öland today, we found lots of them covering the floor in a dense hazel cops.

Anemone hepatica is a perennial herb with evergreen large leathery leaves. The flower buds are first to appear among the leaf litter mostly covering the ground in spring. The flowers can vary in colour from light blue to dark and sometimes lilac, red or pink. After flowering when the flower stalks bend down to the ground, ants tend to eat the fleshy fruit.

“Hepatica is named from its leaves, which, like the human liver (Greek hepar), have three lobes. It was once used as a medicinal herb. Owing to the doctrine of signatures, the plant was once thought to be an effective treatment for liver disorders. Although poisonous in large doses, the leaves and flowers may be used as an astringent, as a demulcent for slow-healing injuries, and as a diuretic.” (Wikipedia)

Hello Ulla. This is a beautiful flower welcoming the much anticipated spring. The sharpness and details of the stamens are really amazing against the delicate purplish petals. Great framing and well rendered tone in the frame.

Bonjour Ulla,
So simple and how beautiful. The Liverwort is such a fine flower, which we have in our mountain areas too (but they flower later). Love the way you composed your picture, including the shiny leaf surrounded by dry ones from last year. And the purple color of the Hepatica is very well rendered.Thanks!
