The Common Sympetrum
Sympetrum striolatum ♂

The most common of the UK dragonflies, S. striolatum has a long season compared to many of the other UK species, and is often the last species left flying - the end of September is its normal limit. This one was photographed in October, so I guess he's going to be gone soon.

There are a number of somewhat similar Sympetrum species which it can be confused with, but thankfully there are distinguishing features. If you look at the front of the face between the two simple eyes there's a black band - if the band extends significantly below the eyes then it's either Sympetrum vulgatum or Sympetrum nigrescens, if it doesn't you're looking at S. striolatum. For an example of what the face of S. striolatum looks like, please have a look at the Workshop I've posted here!

The other UK Sympetrum species have coloured areas towards the base of the wings - if you can see those then you're almost certainly looking at S. flaveolum, S. sanguineum or S. fonscolombei.

You showed me how it should look like. Crystal clarity and detail. Lovely composition. This is what I strive for now that the dragon bug bit me. I would love to hear some pro's and con's on the lens you used Adrian, I am considering getting one?
