[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Lestes dryas is a species of damselfly which is found across Europe, Asia and North America. In North America it is known as the Emerald Spreadwing and this name is becoming more widely used in Europe. In Britain, it is very rare so its common name is the Scarce Emerald Damselfly. An alternate name in Ireland is the Turlough Spreadwing. L. dryas can tolerate extreme conditions that few other dragonflies can survive.Like the other members of the Lestes genus both sexes of L. dryas have largely metallic green bodies with a bronze iridescence. They usually rest with their wings half spread. L.dryas is very similar in appearance to the Emerald Damselfly L. sponsa and care must be taken to tell the two species apart.

The male has blue eyes. Powder blue pruinescence develops on the front and end of the abdomen, the pronotum and the sides of the thorax. However all Lestes are very similar in appearance and it is the shape and colour of the anal appendage that is characteristic. The anal appendages in L. dryas and L. sponsa are black whilst in the other European Lestes they are white or light coloured. L. dryas and L. sponsa have slightly different shaped appendages as show in the photographs.

Hi Pawel.
I continue to dream to take picture of damselflies only. They are not widespread near my location. Rare shots of not so beautiful species are not very good. Yours is perfect. and again you demonstrate an excellent use of fine telelens and tubes. Picture is very nice with delicate pleasant colours, amazing subject, composition and combination of sharpness and blurriness. Well done.

Hello Pawel,
I just return from a short holiday at the Black See and in Bucegi Mountains - Romania.
You managed perfect this macro image with a big insect living also in my region. Outstanding clarity, focus and details. In the next weeks I will post some photos with birds living around the Black See coast.
Thanks for sharing!

Interesting species and great photo Pawel! Very good composition, fantastic soft lighting and impressive sharpness.
