Common name: Wall brown

Lasiommata megera is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae (subfamily Satyrinae). It is widespread in the Palearctic ecozone with a large variety of habitats and number of generations a year.The Wall brown gets its name from the characteristic behaviour of resting with wings two-thirds open on any bare surface, including bare ground and, of course, walls. I posted this characteristic pose in WS.

The basking behaviour of this butterfly allows it to benefit from the full warmth of the sun whose rays shine directly on the butterfly, but also get reflected back onto the butterfly from whichever surface it is resting on. This habit allows the butterfly to raise its body temperature sufficiently high for it to fly. In particularly hot weather, however, such basking is avoided and the butterfly may even retreat to a suitably-shaded spot to avoid overheating.

The larva feeds on grasses in the genera Festuca, Bromus, Deschampsia, Poa, Dactylis and Brachypodium. It has 3-4 generations per year

Hello Nikos,
A stunning shot indeed and quite impressive quality. This particular species of butterfly is a real beauty when it comes to well defined markings. Nicely focused while displaying wonderful detail. Colors are rich yet natural looking. I really like the clean blurred BG. A winner in my book!!

Thanks for visiting my gallery....I like this lovely Wall Brown butterfly specie. It is a very rare in my region. This specie has lovely brown colors with some nice round markings.

Hi Nikos,
Lights and colors are beautiful, but the DoF is very shallow, even the lower wings are blurred, meanwhile the upper right isn't sharp enough. The b-fly's too much off-centered to the corner and the background is strange also. I don't know what tool you used there, blur or eraser maybe, but the result's artificial and unpleasant. The WS photo's much better, if I were you I'd choose that one. The point is given for the nice natural colors and lights only, as mentioned. Probably next time you manage to make an extraordinary photo of this nice species - good luck!
