Leucospis gigas Fabricius 1793
Hymenoptera: Leucospidae
The genus Leucospis include 109 species amongst which the most known are L. gigas, L. affinis and L. japonica. It is a group within the Chalcidoidea, composed exclusively of ectoparasitoids of aculeate wasps or bees. They are typically mimics of bees or stinging wasps, often black with yellow, red, or white markings, sometimes metallic, with a robust mesosoma and very strong sculpturing. The hind femora are often greatly enlarged, with a row of teeth or serrations along the lower margin as in Chalcididae. L. gigas like other leucospids, it is mainly an ektoparasitoid of solitary bees and less frequently on solitary wasps. L gigas lays several eggs on each host and the active first stage larva destroys any other competitors that may be present in the same host. Its life history is not completly known. |

HI Nikos, very nice capture of this leucospis,i like a lot the excellent sharpness and the decentralized composition, well done! Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano
Hello Nikos,
In India I have seen this species. They are very fast when walk on ground. Well captured if we look at its DOF, color and details. My test is bit tight crop for such small insect macro picture to get more details and to get rid from BLANK SPACE in the frame.
Thanks for sharing,
Best regards and have a nice WE,
Srikumar

Hello Nikos,
I like the detail and natural colors you were able to capture. Interesting notes about this unique little wasp mimic. The WS images are also good, but this is the one I like the most. Composition wise less open space to the right side of the frame may be more eye appealing, but this is just my personal preference.
