[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I spotted this strange looking bird perched on a boulder along a small stream while in Tanzania. I had to wait until I got home to find out it is a Hammerkop.
With a long bill and a long crest it's head resembles a hammer, this is how it got its name. It has an all brown body, partially webbed toes, a short tail and huge wings.
SIZE: 47.5-50 cm (19-20 in.)
WEIGHT: 415- 430 g (14.5-15.05 oz.)
DIET: Includes frogs, tadpoles, fish and invertebrates
INCUBATION: Approximately 30 days
CLUTCH SIZE 3-7 eggs
FLEDGING DURATION 7 weeks

Hello Ron,
Indeed a strange looking bird....The details are very sharp. Excellent focus. The bird is not shy at all.
Marius.
Hello Ron,
Hammerkop! I have also captured so many but still haven't posted yet. Well focus and well exposure. Although not such eye catching BG (Rocks) but you'll find them sitting on rocks near stream. Details look good too.
Thanks for sharing,
Regards and have a nice Week,
Srikumar

Hi Ron,i don't remember this curious bird,it seems a brown duck but isn't that as i can read in the note. A magnificent capture while it take a break on the rock, and the quality is another time the best as possible, useful post!! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano
Hi Ron,
Great shot, the hammerkop looks like another branch of the tree. ☺ Nice details on the plumage, perfectly blurred background, however, the strange and spectacular bird gains all the attention. Excellent exposure again. Bravo!
Kind regards, László
