Clouded Yellow - Colias croceus

This is the first time I’ve managed to get a decent capture of this beautiful yellow butterfly. On Lesvos it was fairly common. In flight it is striking with its intense yellow colouring and large wingspan of up to 50 mm. The upper surfaces of the wings are vividly orange-yellow with a broad black border from which the name ‘clouded’ is derived. There are black spots near the center forewing. The females have light spots running along black borders on the upper surface.

It is a butterfly that breeds in southern Europe and east through Turkey and the Middle East. In Sweden it is a very rare visitor.

The eggs are laid on leguminous plants on which the larvae feed. They grow rapidly in warm weather and sometimes pupate within a month.

This was captured from a distance of 50 cm. It has been cropped, sharpened and I’ve adjusted the levels.

A healthy specimen of the Clouded Yellow, Ulla. The typical markings on both sides of the wings are very well captured.

Hello Ulla,
I was just thinking, you don't have seen this Clouded Yellow in Sweden this year..no, no it was more South. We have scarcely butterflies around, weather was too cold or so often clouded. A fine and simple picture of this lovely species. A little bit of color in our rather grey days

Hi Ulla.
It is very interesting that you managed to catch so rare for your places species and it is almost the same, which is widespread in our region. Pictured subject is very nice and pleasant for look by composition and attractive POV. Details of the insect and tiny flowers are excellent and blurriness of the BG is fine too despite the use of compact camera. Even without sunlight shot is very colourful. My warm greetings and TFS. This is a most beautiful and delicate photo, Ulla. The colours are so gentle on the eye, and tone in so well together. It could almost be a colour palette for interior design.
