Patagonian Mara (Dolichotis patagonum)
Near Threatened.
The Patagonian Mara is also known as the "Patagonian cavy" or "Patagonian hare".
It lives in Central and Southern Argentina. Maras inhabit arid grasslands and scrub desert. Maras like to live in burrows and will occasionally inhabit burrows that were made by other animals. The Patagonian Mara eats grasses and other vegetation. Maras are monogamous, mating for life. Very little territoriality is evident, though males appear to have a dominance hierarchy. Maras spend most of their time with their mate, traveling as a pair. Patagonian Maras are active during the day. Patagonian Mara young are kept in a communal burrow called a creche. As many as 15 pairs of Maras may deposit their young in one creche. Maras usually produce two young per litter and produce three to four litters per year. In captivity, maras normally live 8-10 years. The Patagonian Mara population in the wild is decreasing. Their decline is caused by two factors: (1 habitat loss, and (2 sharing of territory and resources with European hares, introduced to South America by humans.

I wish I used less DOF (too late now). Yet because the plant is green on a green background it remains not too distracting (at least I hope so)

Thanks for looking

Hi JeanMarie.
Excellent picture of a nice animal. Its pose is so attractive and BG is simply amazing. I like pleasant lighting and colour palette of the shot. They are delicate and nice. Composition of the image is spot on and isolation of the main subject from BG is superb. Well done and kind wishes.
