Dice Snake - Natrix tessellata (Laurenti, 1768)
Polish name - zaskroniec rybolow

It lives in in Italy, Southeast Europe, Turkey, Western to Central Asia and in the Middle East. The maximum lenght is 2 m. The colour may vary from greyish green to brownish or almost black, with dark spots on the back. There are no distinct head markings. It is not poisonous, as a defense it empties its cloacal contents which has disgusting smell.

The species is the most aquatic european snake, typically found along coasts and lake shores. Its diet consists mainly of small fish. They hibernate from October to April in dry holes near the water.

The breeding season is from May to June. In June to July the females lay their eggs near the water, in loose earth under stones or in piles of dead plant matter. One clutch consists of 10-25 eggs. The young snakes hatch in early September.

This snake was taken at the stony bank of the Skadar Lake, where it is exteremely abundant. Up to ten snakes may be seen in an hour just sitting quietly in one spot over the water.
