Status: Endemic
Size: Adults 65 - 68cm
Weight: 5 - 8kg
Colour: Slate grey/blue back, white breast and belly, Yellow eyes and eye band. Flesh coloured feet.
Habitat: Forest and scrub land
Voice: A shrill call.
Lifespan: At least 22 years.
Eggs: Usually lays two white eggs.
Population: Mainland New Zealand, estimated 450 pairs (2002)
Stewart Island, estimated 200 pairs (Blair, 2000)
Sub-antarctic islands, estimated 1200 pairs (Moore, 1992)

Juvenile birds: Immature birds, have grey eyes and absence of yellow eye band, and yellow head plumage muted or absent. Adult plumage achieved at 14 - 16 months.

Chicks: Chicks are coated with thick dark brown down feathers.

I felt this nice image needed to make a stronger statement. I increased the value range and cropped to make it feel more like a portrait than a penguin that is cut in half.
