I was at the school bus stop. Winter had departed but some primitive roads as mine were still muddy. As I passed a large pond with no name and then across the road ran this big bird. It was out of season but it ran as fast as it could. I was lucky enough to get within 100 feet from him but depended on my 85mm portrait lens which is one I use for landscapes...or did till I shed myself of DSLR's.

These birds are not rare to the area...at least in a hunters eye, but I had only a half dozen encounters in my years there...1988-92 and 98-2006. As fortune would have it I had some good luck with heavy cropping. I have no idea what my ISO or other settings were. Judging from the noise, I would guess I was shooting at 800. This event happened within a matter of 2 minutes but covered a long distance as I chased it with my car...as fortune would have it he stayed near the primitive road...Isn't my wilderness a lovely memory?:-)

Pheasants are characterized by strong sexual dimorphism, males being highly ornate with bright colours and adornments such as wattles and long tails. Males are usually larger than females and have longer tails. Males play no part in rearing the young. Pheasants typically eat seeds and some insects.

There are 35 species of pheasant in 11 genera. The best-known is the Common Pheasant, which is widespread throughout the world in introduced feral populations and in farm operations. Various other pheasant species are popular in aviaries, such as the Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus).

Bob, couldn't resist redoing the snap my way. Hope I did not hurt your feelings, and if I did, please forgive me.
Altered levels, cropped, added more color and composed my own kind of frame. I like my handiwork and hope you might too!
